Oh yes. I just wish the shippers would stop not-tagging shipping fics out of some belief that, despite knowing people are consciously avoiding a shipper-fic, if they sucker you into reading one, you'll enjoy it.

I know that there was always a lot of shipping in fanfic, but it has never been so prevalent as it is now. There seems to be this fixed belief in newer ficcers that fanfic must involve canon or non-canon shipping. I've even seen people saying they are abandoning a story they were enjoying writing because they can't figure out how to put a shipping angle in it.

Ugh. Seriously? This makes me so depressed. I was hoping this was an MCU-only phenomenon. Kink-meme goggles or whatever.

Although now that I think of it, I recall a old post (pre-Castiel) about Supernatural that LITERALLY said "well, I don't approve of incest, but Dean and Sam are the only two main characters! What were we *supposed* to do?"

...dude...

Seriously? Wow. 'cause the amazing slate of characters of the week, both male and female, leave such a dearth of possibilities to work with if you need to hook Sam or Dean up.

I actually found the original quote! (it's in the reply, not in the journal post)

That's...so...sad. To believe that you have to have a ship, to the point where you force yourself to ship something that you don't agree with...

Argh nooooooo.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Funny, because, having read fanfictions for about 25 years now, I've never noticed so many non-romantic stories as I have the last few years...

Equal length of time in fandom and I've had the same experience as the OP. Maybe it depends on the corners you frequent, but shipping seems to dominate most television based fic.

Troll comment is trolling. I hope it was an attempt at trolling anyway, better that than just a need to be contrary.

nayrt

Uh, what? Just because one person has had a different experience, doesn't mean they're trolling. Some fandoms really have diversified over time.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. This whole "you disagree, therefore you're trolling" thing has got to stop.

People have different experiences. People have different opinions. They're allowed to talk about them. If you want to live in an echo chamber, good for you I guess, but don't call other people "trolls" for not wanting that.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree. I believe people should be called trolls for that.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL +1

Well-played.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Your experience is not monolithic. Nor is mine, but it doesn't make me a troll.

It does make you rude, however, for your reply.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't attempting to troll or be contrary just to be contrary. I was simply pointing out that, in my experience, I'm running into more non-pairing fics now than I ever have. But, as someone upthread has pointed out, all experiences are different.
