Twins really are the coolest. In fiction, that is. In real life, they're fairly normal, probably, but I'm not close friends with any so I don't really know for sure.

Also, this is a great way to take advantage of a period of being sick of romance. There's so much variety in how people relate to each other!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Crap. Accidentally wrote a secret in my sleep again.

Twins <3

I think it depends on the fandom too. There are some that I absolutely ship the hell out of (like Star Trek) while others where I couldn't care less (Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Star Wars, Spec Ops: The Line, Harry Potter). People that obsess over shipping in one fandom don't necessarily do so for EVERY fandom and I think there are situations where it's more conducive.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there are some ships (4, actually) that I'm really interested in and I ship them hard, but I'm "noromo" about most shows that I watch.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sick of romance, but YES, that's a really good point about it being so much easier to just be lazy and settle for shippy fic even when you'd prefer something else, because shippy fic is so much more prolific. I really have to resist the urge to do that.

Especially when it comes to slash -- there are so many fictional best friends who I like as lovers, but prefer as platonic friends, yet I read more slash of them than gen just because it's easier to find and I don't actively anti-ship them. Especially when it comes to kinkmemes.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes. I just wish the shippers would stop not-tagging shipping fics out of some belief that, despite knowing people are consciously avoiding a shipper-fic, if they sucker you into reading one, you'll enjoy it.

I know that there was always a lot of shipping in fanfic, but it has never been so prevalent as it is now. There seems to be this fixed belief in newer ficcers that fanfic must involve canon or non-canon shipping. I've even seen people saying they are abandoning a story they were enjoying writing because they can't figure out how to put a shipping angle in it.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. Seriously? This makes me so depressed. I was hoping this was an MCU-only phenomenon. Kink-meme goggles or whatever.

Although now that I think of it, I recall a old post (pre-Castiel) about Supernatural that LITERALLY said "well, I don't approve of incest, but Dean and Sam are the only two main characters! What were we *supposed* to do?"

...dude...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously? Wow. 'cause the amazing slate of characters of the week, both male and female, leave such a dearth of possibilities to work with if you need to hook Sam or Dean up.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Funny, because, having read fanfictions for about 25 years now, I've never noticed so many non-romantic stories as I have the last few years...

I commiserate, anon. I ship, but at the same time I want more gen! I want more adventure fic! I want more case fic! I want to know more about the characters I like than who they are banging.(And in what position, and how often.)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I want more case fic!

Reading this on flat my mind automatically jumped to fic about our meme overlord.

I'm not actually sick of all romance, but that's the only clue that I didn't somehow post this secret in my sleep O.o

Is it just me, or has there recently been a noticeable increase in the phenomena of using shipping simply as a narrative device to study two characters because coming up with a non-romantic plot that involves them is too difficult, or to use sex as a shorthand for ALL interpersonal interaction between characters of any kind?

Although tbh, ubiquitous shipping isn't the overused fanfic trope that bugs me the most of all. The one that bugs me the most of all is non-canon Had A Difficult Relationship With His Father. Boringest emotional shortcut ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I make no apologies for shipping obsessively. It's what gets me really into shows (which is kinds hysterical when I'm so anti-romance in real life). But the shipping hate around here gets to be a bit much at times.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not hate, it's fatigue. And in the case of writers whose work gets bypassed because there's no pairing involved, frustration. I write both and it pains me to see the intricately crafted plot Fic languish when the relationship fluff I dash off in an hour gets hits and kudos.

What shipping hate? F!S is pretty pro-shipping. And pro-lots-of-different-ships. Some people don't like that shipping is so overdone -- which is understandable, because it is -- but I haven't ever seen any outright shipping hate. The OP of the secret is pretty clear that it's just their personal reaction, and even mentions that they hope their shipping aversion is "hopefully temporary."

You sound kind of defensive, tbqh.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, I'm the same way. I really love my ships, but I'm like, "feh, romance" in real life.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Surely you can understand that in at least ONE corner of the internet people can voice their dislike of shipping?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
There aren't that many people here who hate shipping. And a lot of people don't hate it, they just want to see more of other things.

I think confirmation bias might be at work in your case.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd kind of like recs. I like shipping as a vehicle for character development and fleshing out mental states, because that stuff often gets short shrift in canons where the onscreen point is Getting Stuff Done. But I also really like well-written gen.

Also, if you're into Harry Potter, the hp-friendship comm is good. And dysfuncentine is all about relationships that don't fluff or go in normally-written directions. Might be especially fun if manstream shipping is making you go "no."

[community profile] gensplosion is a rec comm specifically for gen fic :)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I just never get secrets like this because, ultimately, who gives a shit what everyone else likes? Is it really that bad that other people are enjoying something just because you'd prefer them to enjoy it some other way? I think it just boils down to elitism, most of the time, when one group of fans claims to be superior to another group because they "do this" or "don't do that."

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Did you not see where I literally said word-for-word "I don't mind other people liking them"?

Or the part where I said my aversion to romance is "hopefully temporary"? (because I think romance is just fine, I'm just personally oversaturated.)

Look, I like disagreeing, but please don't put words in my mouth in order to disagree with me.
