Re: why

I think of that too, but the insult itself is still based on appearance.

For example, I've heard PUA describe "every pretty woman" as "pretty on the outside but an fat/ugly chick on the inside," usually as a patronizing way of saying women are insecure and neurotic and too-sensitive and easily manipulated by criticizing her appearance. It has nothing to do with how she really looks, but the traits associated with women who are ugly or fat...

You can't so easily remove that aspect from the insult in either case.

i don't think 'neckbeard' or 'fedora' reduces someone to their physical appearance, tho. neckbeard isn't just "you're badly groomed" and fedora isn't just "you're badly dressed". they're specific characteristics of the nerd population that happened to be common enough that people could notice and parody them. and that they chose to take on, in similar ways (i think with both of them there was an impression originally that the person had chosen to cultivate this appearance because they thought it made them look classy).

like, i don't think it's the same as just calling them ugly.

"Fat/ugly girl on the inside" doesn't only mean "overweight," either.

They're specific characteristics of the female population that happened to be common enough so that people could start associating personality traits with them.

When PUA say someone is a fat girl on the inside, they're *not* calling the girl fat. They're calling her insecure and easy prey.
