i don't think 'neckbeard' or 'fedora' reduces someone to their physical appearance, tho. neckbeard isn't just "you're badly groomed" and fedora isn't just "you're badly dressed". they're specific characteristics of the nerd population that happened to be common enough that people could notice and parody them. and that they chose to take on, in similar ways (i think with both of them there was an impression originally that the person had chosen to cultivate this appearance because they thought it made them look classy).

like, i don't think it's the same as just calling them ugly.

"Fat/ugly girl on the inside" doesn't only mean "overweight," either.

They're specific characteristics of the female population that happened to be common enough so that people could start associating personality traits with them.

When PUA say someone is a fat girl on the inside, they're *not* calling the girl fat. They're calling her insecure and easy prey.
