Post your thoughts on plot-bunnies/unfinished fanfics that are on your mind

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Talk about difficulties in writing it, motivations for wanting to write it, fun research you've had to do, interesting experiences you've had while writing or thinking about it, worries you have about it, etc. And be specific about the fandom!

I'm writing fanfic for SPG. Problem is, two people in the band left while I was in the middle of writing it, and now I'm stuck, and I know that it's really stupid, but I feel uncomfortable writing it now that they're gone, but they were characters in the story, and the story was already 2/3 of the way complete before they left the band?

It's dumb, because I am including someone else who left the band, but he left the band before I joined the fandom, and there was still art/fic with him, and he was still in the fictional lore, so it felt different.

The Monstrumologist, Trying Again (yeahh don't laugh)

So. I agreed to write a TA fic (for those not in the know, TA is a romcom). With romance, obviously. That's the first time I'm going to write romance - and I don't even ship the characters (seeing as I don't do shipping).

I'm kinda excited and also really scared I'll fuck it up. And IDK if I have the sense of humour necessary to write a story for a romcom canon source. IDK.

I'm also writing a post-Isle of Blood fix-it for The Monstrumologist fandom, and I keep worrying that I'm making it too conceptual and too full of philosophizing/too feely and hence OOC/too obscure. Man, writing one's first work for a fandom is hard -_- The fact that the plot involves lots of suicide thoughts/urges doesn't help.

There are two MLP fics that I want to do eventually, but are really far off in comparison to the stuff I'm working on now.

Reality: Twilight wakes up in the morning with Rainbow Dash at her side, ready to spend her whole life with her. But every time she questions some aspect of their situation, she wakes up in her bed again, and the world is slightly different.

A Dream About Moonlight: after pondering whether she's still useful in this era, Luna begins to have vivid nightmares about a diamond dog shamaness who lives by moonlight and fears the sun.

I'm working on this Tolkien AU -- well, "working on" is a little strong. Technically it's not an AU, either, but an in-universe story set far in the future, with Tolkien dwarves and (a very, very few) elves and their relationships with other immigrant communities in a US city circa 1900.

The research is fun and dipping my toes into conlang is terrifying and I haven't decided whether there are going to be dragons or not, but I'm leaning toward yes. I don't know whether to set it in a totally fictional city or an alt-real-life one, either.

It's extremely ridiculous and probably Highly Problematic in a bunch of ways, but it's still fun so I'm still poking at it, and probably will be for a while. No clue if it will / should ever see the light of day, though. I don't know that anyone would want to read a Gilded Age Tolkien fic with all original characters -- anyone but me, that is.

I have Fire Lord Iroh AU where Lu Ten never dies, so Iroh ends up becoming Fire Lord and Ozai is the governor of Ba Sing Se. Iroh still has his spirit journey, moral revelation though, so he's planning on giving back power to the other nations. Ozai doesn't like this and has Azula poison Lu Ten and frame the murder on Zuko before Iroh can put his plans into motion. Meanwhile, Aang has woken up from the iceburg as usual, but now has to deal with a world on the brink of tipping back into war vs one that's still actively in it.

I have the entire thing plotted out in 5k word outline, but I never got around to writing it.

Same goes for a Frozen fic in which Hans becomes a literal God after tricking Anna to go on a quest with him to find a magical artifact to stop yet another eternal winter. (Elsa is not around to make everything go "poof".) She and Elsa then have to stop him.

And then I have a Labyrinth origin fic, in which Jareth and Sarah have been doing this shit for like three incarnations now. Jareth was made its king by (the) Ariadne, who was made its queen by a spirit called the Bookkeeper, who was made its king by a spirit called the Dreamer (aka Serra) who was the original master. Mixes medieval stuff with Greek mythology with like pre-written history stuff. Had a super hard time covering huge time gaps and having it not get bogged down in angst.

Those are my main three that are all in states of half-finished.

I have this half-finished humor fic about the Founders trying to found Hogwarts and being very much not a serious, professional, all-powerful, foursome of Great Wizards Doing Serious Work, but four wildly different and eccentric friends who got laughed out of their communities going "shit I have no idea what I'm doing!" I have bits and pieces of it done but haven't been able to finish or string it together yet.

I have a fairy tale fusion of Star Trek (the whole pre-reboot franchise) that is still all in my head.

I never did manage to get that "what was that whole Baron Maupertuis thing?" Sherlock Holmes fic off the ground. Pity that.

This weird First Doctor/Master fic with Doctor+Corsair and Doctor+others friendship that was conceived of for the sole purpose of thumbing my nose at all the fanon assumptions associations that inevitably bogs down all fanfic creativity for this goddamn ship/genre.

I have a partially-written semi-epistolary Starsky & Hutch deathfic set between 1979 and 1993 that keeps turning into a rip-off of either All The President's Men, The Untouchables, or both. I also can't figure out which character to kill first, or if I should be merciful and kill them both together.

...That's um...a lot?

Awww. I'd read this HP fic in a heartbeat. It's such a nice idea, especially seeing as Hogwarts is totally fucked up.

Haha I was planning on doing a bunch of stuff to have the Founders establishing certain practices out of casual immediate practicality or very era-specific concerns, and kind of indicating how it would quickly get outdated or warped into pointlessly revered traditions more and more over time. I'm probably not doing a very good job of that, since I'm too long-winded.

But it sounds very good and it'd explain a lot of the canon 'verse! So. I believe in you, for what it's worth.

(as a fellow long-winded writer who tends to get stuck when writing super elaborate concept-based things).

I have lots of unfinished fanfic or just plot bunnies on my mind. I indulge myself thinking about them before I go to sleep, day-dreaming about them while at work, spending days until I have the perfect sentence. And then I don't write them down or post them, because the world doesn't need another bad!fic author. :)

I've gone through a small phase recently of researching animals for daemon AUs in a couple of my fandoms. I've got the animals and names picked for the Holmes AU, but every time I try to actually write it, I stall out.

It's possible that this is one of those things I enjoy more as a meta/headcanon sort of thing than as a writing exercise.

Spoilers for Winter Soldier below:

I reeeeally want to write an Avengers/HP mash-up where Clint is a Muggle-born, but living in the muggle world. After the events of the Avengers (Hydra-)SHIELD basically keeps him imprisoned, and Clint, realising they aren't going to let him out, uses his magic to escape. Because he's still a superhero and wants to keep working with Natasha, the Avengers and even SHIELD he convinces the Ministry of Magic* that they need an ambassador between the two worlds and that he's the one best qualified for the job.

Then the events of the Winter Soldier happens, SHIELD falls apart and Clint, after having a bit of a freak out, gets his shit together and sets out to get all the non-Hydra SHIELD agents currently under cover/on mission out of dodge together with his old school friend Penny.

I reeeally want to write this, it's kind of eating my brain, but Penny would be Penny from BBT (the reason she gets none of the science and never gets any better at it is because her speciality have always been runes, and all the numbers and silly Muggle terms just mean nothing for her), and her full name would include a fuckton of middle names all starting with P because she's from a very traditional Pureblood line, the Pennyworths.

I would be fine with a crossover, but I don't like multi-crossovers, because I have yet to read a good one, so I feel like the fic would be crap as well. But on the other hand I keep thinking up new details for how this version of the Wizarding World works, and elaborating on random stuff in my head.

* The American War of Independence was only a muggle thing and didn't happen in the Wizarding World. All the American Pureblood families are from Britain and the MoM treats America like a beloved, but slightly annoying, kid.

I'd really like to write or draw something with Sailor ChibiMoon, Sailor Saturn and the Sailor Quartet being an awesome team and holding their own against a whole mess of villains on their own in Crystal Tokyo.

I probably won't write it, but I'm going to at least think about it and maybe draw something.

A couple years back I wrote the first two stories of what, plot-wise, would have been about a 7-story arc Supernatural series. Those two were pretty well received and I started to write a 3rd but then petered out as I lost motivation. Now I kind of want to finish it just to finish it, but apparently I really need an Alpha/Beta to bounce ideas off of...I had one previously and I worked out a LOT of worldbuilding/character stuff, but now I'm having trouble going from that to an actual story. Le sigh....

Very rough MCU AU idea however I think it's stupid and dumb so I don't imagine I'd post it anyway and also I'm not American and I don't have anyone to correct any phrases I've slipped up on.

I have a lot of general ideas for both a superpowered college AU and a daemon AU of the MCU. But in both cases, I have a LOT of ideas for individual scenes and character backgrounds, but no real cohesive plot/broader story.

I've got a Harry Potter fic that was originally supposed to be a very open-ended, one-shot "Percy's missing after the battle at the ministry" story. It was something that I started after the tenth anniversary of 9/11, and the whole point of it was that even if somebody is never found, they're always remembered by *someone.*

It was super well received, and I got the itch to expand on it. So it turned into a story about how Arthur becomes obsessed with a photo of Percy that appeared on a makeshift memorial (which is how he realized Percy was missing at all), and how the whole situation tears at the fabric of the Molly/Arthur relationship until they meet the woman who put his photo up in the first place, hear her story of Percy and then begin to take baby steps to fix their own relationship while welcoming her (and her unborn child) into the family.

And I was still going to leave it open-ended regarding Percy...but now that I've gone beyond the idea of it being a short sort of allegory for people who are never found after tragedies, I kind of want it to be a situation where, yes, he died in the attack and then Voldemort (or an enterprising Death Eater) hid his body and cursed a friend of Arthur's into encouraging a split with Molly (which, I had actually unwittingly supplied the groundwork for earlier) with the implication being that outside of Dumbledore, the Weasleys loosely hold the Order together, and if they can't even keep themselves sorted out, they can't do anything else, either, and everything crumbles.

I've been holding on to these last chapters for coming up on two years (one I wrote, but it seems to have been misplaced, and two in my head still). There's a part of me that doesn't want to have to deal with "what if I can't find the missing chapter" and is buried in "writing is hard!" self-doubt that keeps me from finishing it up, but then I also feel a little bad about taking it all the way to that end (instead of stopping at fragile-but-fixing Weasleys), because I never warned for character death. Because I never intended for the story to go this far.
