A question about slurs

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
In the internet age, do N-word privileges still exist?
Thinking about but thread where someone claims they have the right to use the word f*g because they are themselves gay. Is this the case? What about the N-word? on the internet where you would have to explain that you have N-word privileges do you still have them?

It all depends on context, imo.

If a gay dude wants to call himself a fag, okay. If he wants to call his gay friends who are okay with that nickname fags, okay. But if he calls someone else a fag and they ask him not to do that, and he keeps doing it, he's kind of an asshole.

I'm of the opinion that if you think you need privileges to use a word, then you should probably avoid using the word.

Not necessarily because it's offensive (though in some places it could be), but because "ONLY I USE WORD B/C IT APPLIES TO ME!!!11" comes off as immature. I get people want to own a word to make it less derogatory, but a word is a word is a word. It's been said that it's the context you have to worry about. (I'm curious to see a "privileged" gay person's reaction to a Brit going out for a cigarette, though.)

honestly imo you should never call someone a slur they dont consent to you calling them, even if it applies to you both. i think with words like f*g, those they apply to should feel entitled to reclaim them but should also err on the side of caution when referring to anybody but themselves with the words. not everybody who those words apply to is comfortable with them.
