Re: Inspired by Secret #6 - Favorite non-romantic relationships in your fandoms?

Oh man, Suikoden has a bunch of them. I actually HATE Tir and Gremio as a romantic ship, mostly because I love the fact that Gremio is more or less Tir's MOM. XD Just because a dude is kind of effeminate and willing to die for the other doesn't mean he's GAY for him - he took an oath of fealty when Tir was a little kid, and shipping them based on THAT would make Gremio really, really sketchy. Meanwhile, I am a complete sucker for fealty and so on - Larsa and Basch in Final Fantasy XII are another good example of a partnership that could turn into this.

In the second Suikoden game, the protag and his best-friend-turned-antagonist are shipped to heck and back too, since they're cute teenage boys (one with long hair) who openly talk about what good friends they are and how much they mean to each other. But I think their friendship is a perfectly valid partnership as it is. (And also really like the canon het ship with one of them, in part because on the surface he APPEARS to be using her, and she APPEARS to have no say in the matter, and the situation is all kinds of messed up, but if you really look at all the interaction they DO have...)

Oh, and speaking of Final Fantasy XII - I sorta... don't ship anyone in the entire game except Gabranth/Drace. (And sorta Cid/Venat, because Dr. Cid is just sick enough for that.) I love love LOVE Balthier and Fran as partners. Maybe sometimes friends with benefits, because he's young and macho and secretly needs familiar comfort sometimes rather than random titillation, and she's not human and doesn't care what anyone might have to say about her reputation by hume standards, and she's secure enough to know what she is to him even if he goes out and fools around with other women - above all else, partners. Vaan and Penelo, partners. (Vaan is too dumb for a relationship, frankly. XD) It's odd, because normally I'm all about partnership-shipping, but in this game? I just like them all as regular ol' partners.

oh man I feel you on Suikoden! similar to II, I don't ship Frey and Lyon from V, they are much cuter as dear friends with a side of loyal bodyguard. I will even admit to preferring Lazlo and Snowe's friendship over shipping.

...and Percival/Borus, and Sigurd/Hervey, and All The Queen's Knights, and...

I almost mentioned all the knights. My friends and I have been known to jokingly refer to certain roles as "the Stars of Heavenly Yaoi", because people ALWAYS ship it, no matter how much evidence there is to the contrary. -_-

As for Lazlo and Snowe, the friend who gave me her copy of 4 advised me beforehand that the game is more enjoyable if you just forget about Snowe as much as possible, and I found that she was correct. :D

I just don't understand anyone who looks at "I've raised you since you were a little kid" and interprets it as "so I can totally fuck you now!" And thinks it's anything but skeevy on top of that. But that's just me.

Exactly! I've seen some people go with the idea that it was the younger's idea - now that Tir's an adolescent, he discovers he's hot for his guardian - but I dunno, it doesn't exactly seem very common that people hit puberty and suddenly decide they want to screw their parents or older siblings or whatnot, biologically related or otherwise. :P
