Inspired by Secret #6 - Favorite non-romantic relationships in your fandoms?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Lets take the opportunity to squee over some really great non-romantic relationships in our fandoms! Including instances where you don't romantically ship a non-canon juggernaut ship, but still really love the two characters' relationship. Friends, enemies, frenemies, siblings, parent/child, grandparent/child, mentor/mentee, boss/underling, coworkers, non-biological familial figures, and any other relationship under the sun :)

Can anyone think of more great ones? I adore Fred and George Weasley from Harry Potter, and Luke and Leia from Star Wars, but I'm blanking on others...

I adore the Circle kids in Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic. I'm not above shipping them but I think they make a lovely family unit, and I love that each of the four have a slightly different connection with the rest. Briar is the easiest to use as an example: his connection to Sandry is the most emotional (he pours out his heart to her and she makes him feel better), his relationship to Daja is the most physical (she's the one he practices fighting with, generally muscles around together with), and with Tris, it's the most intellectual (she taught him how to read, they learn things from each other, etc.) And of course there's just a whole lot of love in each of these relationships as a baseline.

Vincent Valentine and Yuffie Kisaragi from FF7. I interpret their dynamic (more or less in Dirge of Cerberus) as something like an older brother-kid sister type. It just strikes me that way, and I really like that. But then again, I love sibling dynamics, so I might be biased. =V

Also on the subject of FF7, I dig Tifa and Aerith friendship stuff. Love triangles can take a hike, imho.

Speaking of familial-esque dynamics, I adore the familial relationships between Splinter and the Turtles in the 2k12 series. Sure, Splinter is their teacher, but I really dig that we get to see him be more of an actual father this time around, and I find it to be absolutely precious. That was one of the huge draws of the show for me, personally.

I've said this one before, but Ron/Leslie. Forever and for always.

And then I've always loved Valjean/Cosette.
Practically all the Sailor Scouts' love towards each other.
Ten/Donna like someone else said.
Red/Nicky from Orange is the New Black.
Jaime/Tyrion, Margaery/Olenna, and Podrick/Brienne. I also like Sansa/Tyrion but I never know whether I just friendship it or actually ship it. I'm, like, somewhere in the middle.

ETA: Oh and if real people count, Patrick Stewart/Ian McKellan. For obvious reasons.

Steve and Natasha.
Sam and Steve.
Tony and Rhodey.
Tony and Bruce.
Thor and Steve(mostly from the comics here but I'm hoping we get some Thor+Steve bonding in AoU).
Clint and Natasha.
Nick and Rochelle.
Sam and Dean.
Scott and Stiles.
Hilda, Zelda and Sabrina.
Hiccup and Toothless.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head but I know I've got more.

(I've also got a bunch of relationships that I ship romantically but I really adore the canon friendship as well.)

Mulder and Scully a thousand times over. They're so fascinating to me as a non-romantic relationship.

Also, in DS9, I was always kind of fascinated by the Dax symbiote's relationship with Sisko, and I also liked Jadzia's relationship with Bashir. Also Leslie and Ron from Parks and Rec. And I feel like I'm forgetting a bunch of others but those are the ones that spring immediately to mind.

Sam and Florence in Freefall.

Florence is an engineer, and she sees her role as to maintain order within the ship. She does everything she can to solve problems within official channels, and she does her best to help people even outside the course of her normal duties. But because she's an artificial construct, she has little in the way of legal rights, and she often finds that there's no way to do the right thing without breaking the law.

Sam is a pilot, but in his previous life, he was a thief. He believes that laws serve a purpose, if only because they prevent people from murdering each other, but he thinks they often serve only to get in people's way. He's a good judge of character, and he can often manipulate people into serving his goals by pursuing their own base interests.

Florence has made it her goal to make Sam a better person. Sam has made it his goal to make Florence more willing to break unjust laws. Both of them are succeeding.

I adore Scott and Stiles' relationship in Teen Wolf. They are the best of friends and watching them be there for each other makes me happy. I'm not liking the current season much, but Scott and Stiles are still great to watch together.

Sam and Steve from the MCU! (They have such a nice, easy-going friendship. It's supportive and sweet.) And hell, Steve and Natasha (Who are hilarious together, and lovely) and Steve and Bucky. (Okay, I do ship Steve/Bucky, but maybe it still counts because they aren't canon. Also, I DO love their friendship.) Steve is a great friend in general.

Donna and Ten have already been mentioned, but those two are like friendship perfection. Ugh, there will never be another Ten and Donna.

Uh, it's been since about season two since I watched (or maybe season three, can't keep up) but I always loved Kurt's relationship with his dad on Glee. He was such a loving, supportive dad and tried so hard to be open and honest with his son. While we're speaking of parent/child relationships, I also dig Teen Wolf's. IMO Teen Wolf would be a much better show if it focused more on the parental relationships; I miss Melissa and Scott, and Stiles and Sheriff Stilinski having more time together. They never get enough but are wonderful.

Then there's Shepard and Joker from Mass Effect, Kate and Clint from Marvel, Spartacus and Agron, and Babs and Dinah from DC. (Though okay, I ship Barbara and Dinah a bit too. Still, their canon relationship is very touching and awesome.)

I tend to genship more than I ship-ship, so non-shippy relationships probably make up most of my fic output and reading list. However, some favourites:

- The A-Team (The A-Team), as a team and a family, may they ride forever
- David Banner & Jack McGee (The Incredible Hulk), one of my favourite tense hunter/prey relationships ever
- Dr Richard Kimble & Lt. Philip Gerard (The Fugitive Series), my other favourite hunter/prey relationship
- Joe Dawson & Methos (Highlander), because they were hilarious and also painful in places
- Regina & Rumpelstiltskin (OUAT), because of the snarky painful bitchy almost-family thing they have going
- Gandalf & Pippin (LotR), because the whole thing in Minas Tirith, just a fool's hope, I cried, don't even care
- Nanny Ogg & Granny Weatherwax (Discworld), because Granny can't be having with Nanny at all, and yet so obviously can
- Sherlock Holmes & John Watson (ACD Holmes), always and forever
- Evie O' Connell & Jonathan Carnahan (The Mummy), I will always adore the Carnahan siblings and their bizarre version of caring
- Spock & McCoy (Star Trek), though I also ship them, because bickering and self-sacrifice
- Eugenides & Helen (Queen's Thief), a pair of cousins and rulers who managed to keep their love and loyalty to each other come hell or high water
- Ed Exley & Jack Vincennes (L.A.Confidential), purely on the back of one conversation and a dying warning, but that's more than enough, really

The Doctor and Donna. Although I do ship them. But I also love their completely platonic canon relationship. They are just awesome together no matter the context.

I like the relationship between Dany and Jorah. I don't ship it at all, but I do like the interesting angles of their relationship with him as her adviser, her as his queen, and her getting smarter and making more and more of her own decisions. And I like the angsty ending of their relationship and am intrigued to see what happens in the next few books.

I love pretty much all the friendships in the Tolkien fandom. I think for me, those movies and books are all about the friendships. The romantic relationships that exist are pretty background and less interesting to me than the various friendships.

-(drrr) Shizuo and Celty's friendship is the cutest thing I am all over right now. She is there for him to unload and supports him, and he trusts and has her back, and there's the part that they're each other's shoulder to cry on.
-van gang is also amazing.
-(suits) Donna and Harvey are scary and cool even though the show tries to make me ship them.
-(teen Wolf) Derek and Scott who have gone from noncon bromance, to dubcon bromance, to bromance bromance. Also Derek and other adults (I believe he actually answers mama McCall's texts promptly).
-Ice King and Marceline.

This is Fringe for me. I love Walter and Peter's relationship (father/son), Walter and Astrid's relationship (friends), and Olive's friendship with Charlie from the early seasons.

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2014-07-26 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, Suikoden has a bunch of them. I actually HATE Tir and Gremio as a romantic ship, mostly because I love the fact that Gremio is more or less Tir's MOM. XD Just because a dude is kind of effeminate and willing to die for the other doesn't mean he's GAY for him - he took an oath of fealty when Tir was a little kid, and shipping them based on THAT would make Gremio really, really sketchy. Meanwhile, I am a complete sucker for fealty and so on - Larsa and Basch in Final Fantasy XII are another good example of a partnership that could turn into this.

In the second Suikoden game, the protag and his best-friend-turned-antagonist are shipped to heck and back too, since they're cute teenage boys (one with long hair) who openly talk about what good friends they are and how much they mean to each other. But I think their friendship is a perfectly valid partnership as it is. (And also really like the canon het ship with one of them, in part because on the surface he APPEARS to be using her, and she APPEARS to have no say in the matter, and the situation is all kinds of messed up, but if you really look at all the interaction they DO have...)

Oh, and speaking of Final Fantasy XII - I sorta... don't ship anyone in the entire game except Gabranth/Drace. (And sorta Cid/Venat, because Dr. Cid is just sick enough for that.) I love love LOVE Balthier and Fran as partners. Maybe sometimes friends with benefits, because he's young and macho and secretly needs familiar comfort sometimes rather than random titillation, and she's not human and doesn't care what anyone might have to say about her reputation by hume standards, and she's secure enough to know what she is to him even if he goes out and fools around with other women - above all else, partners. Vaan and Penelo, partners. (Vaan is too dumb for a relationship, frankly. XD) It's odd, because normally I'm all about partnership-shipping, but in this game? I just like them all as regular ol' partners.

I'm in eight million sports anime/manga fandoms, so, teammates of some kind. My favorites are baseball batteries (pitcher/catcher).

In real life sports I also love the teammate relationships. Baseball batteries are still great, and in pro cycling I really love domestique/team leader or lead out man/sprinter.

Magnificent 7: All the boys, but especially JD and Buck
A-Team: All the boys, but especially Face and Murdock
Sanctuary: Magnus/Will (I kinda mentorship it and kinda ship-ship it, I can never decide)
Sarah Jane Adventures: Sarah's relationships with all the kids are great; she's kind of their mentor and kind of their mom, but she also treats them like equals most of the time and they love her for it.
Leverage: OT5 all the way!
Agents of SHIELD: Whole group, but especially Coulson and Skye. (I used to broship FitzSimmons but I straight up ship it now, thanks a ton finale!)

Sherlock, Mycroft and Sherlock
