Gremio/Hero McDohl from the Suikoden series. Their relationship starts out as a kind of nanny/child type of thing, but it's clear their bond is deeper than that. Thanks to the "silent hero" curse of certain JRPGs, we don't get the hero's side of the story, but Gremio does mention he sees the hero as a little brother or son. It is a unique, familial relationship in that, though they didn't initially choose to be around one another, there is a devotion there, and at least one of them learns the meaning of sacrifice.

Unfortunately, this bond has been misunderstood by several people, who think if two people have this much interest in one another, then it must be romantic. (Which is skeevy to me in this case... he practically raised the kid FFS.)
