But why, OP? Why is it so important to receive a certain number of reviews per chapter? Do you feel like you weren't noticed enough otherwise?

I understand the need for feedback, I really do, but you're doing no services to either your readers or yourself. I think you should really look into why you're doing this and stop treating reviews as payment for writing.

Because I used to have this kind of mindset when I was younger and it led to some shitty selfesteem issues.

Difficult to say based on the secret alone, but I think it's a possibility. Which is why I hope they think about their reason for doing it.

I think you're bringing some emotional baggage to this conversation that's affecting your take on the situation. There are many practical reasons for doing what OP does, not just "shitty self esteem issues". The obvious one is spending one's time effectively. Not everyone wants to labor at a long term project without getting some positive feedback on it, because hey, there are plenty of other projects you could work on.

You're right, readers do lose out when the fics they follow go on hiatus, but tell me: what does the author gain by soldiering on when nobody cares?

I never said you should soldier on when nobody cares. I said OP should think about why they do it.

What makes you assume they haven't done so already? Your take is that if they stop and think, they'll come to the conclusion you think is correct, namely to stop treating reviews as payment for writing. I pointed out that there are other reasonable and logical conclusions other than yours, so there's no need to assume that the OP is in the exact same position as you.

You mean the position I was in ten years ago? I already acknowledged as much upthread.
