(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)Second response: No. Just No.
Reading the other comments response: Seeing that some think this is a rather hostile type of response. On one hand, I really get that some writers need the feedback and the validation that their stuff is being read and there is interest, yadda, yadda, etc, etc. In my opinion, that's what hit counts are for. (Kudos I guess at AO3, don't post there, don't know.) If I get one review for every ten hits, I am having a really good week reviews wise.
On the other hand, the reason I think most of the feedback for this is so hostile because of where you see this type of attitude posted with A/Ns and oh help me, in summaries. The writers are generally very young. The plot is probably non existent and the grammar and the spelling just plain don't exist. It feels like a very immature, passive aggressive, cry for attention and help. With a dash of Nyah, nyah, nyah, neiner, neiner. And a good half the time, even if they do get the ten reviews or whatever number they are asking for, they still don't post the chapter because they've 'lost their muse' or are 'too busy.'
So, on grating note fandomwise, this is right up there for me with "I can't write a summary, please read my story anyways and my first story so be kind! LOL" Except in l33t speak and without capitalization.
But hey, this is why the back button was invented and the scroll wheel. *whistles*
And kudos to you OP for keeping this attitude to yourself. Gold star from me on that one. Whatever keeps you motivated. Live and let live and all that. Hurrah!

That said, maybe if I did do the ransoming thing and actually got enough comments, it would get my ass in gear to update my WIPs! (probably not)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)I find watching hit counts and favorites and such (especially on FF.net, I never had good luck with LJ readership unless it was in my specific shipping community and sometimes not then) really are a much better indicator of what is going on with my readership and what isn't. FF.net used to even have stats on at least your profile page about number of views and what country they were from. It was always kind of a high for me to go "I have people who look at my stuff from Australia! How awesome is THAT?"
I know review ransoming wouldn't get me motivated to update my WIPs, because the reason that am not updating them is due to way too much stress. So, ransoming is even more stress IMO. I really like updating on a schedule. "Tuesday, I'm updating this story on Tuesday." Which causes its own type of stress. So, *Sigh* I've made it a point to not post anything until it's finished now. And this means I've got stuff in progress I'd love to post and share, but don't dare because I don't want to get burnt out again.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)It makes me giddy seeing how many countries I have reading my stuff. And hit counts help when I'm feeling down on myself. Seeing a specific number of visits every day I update really gives me a huge boost. Regular readers! *gasp*

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)when it first came out for stats, and yeah, it was still under traffic, I remember you could only get it for your author's profile, and not for individual stories. But like I said, I haven't posted in several years now (ugh stress, WIPS) so haven't checked lately.
It is such a high though. I mean. YAY!
