Glad to see I'm not the only one paying attention to hit counts. Particularly with a WIP, because you can see how many people read the latest chapter to get an idea of the readership you have, since obviously not everyone who checks a fic out is going to stick around.

That said, maybe if I did do the ransoming thing and actually got enough comments, it would get my ass in gear to update my WIPs! (probably not)

I find watching hit counts and favorites and such (especially on FF.net, I never had good luck with LJ readership unless it was in my specific shipping community and sometimes not then) really are a much better indicator of what is going on with my readership and what isn't. FF.net used to even have stats on at least your profile page about number of views and what country they were from. It was always kind of a high for me to go "I have people who look at my stuff from Australia! How awesome is THAT?"

I know review ransoming wouldn't get me motivated to update my WIPs, because the reason that am not updating them is due to way too much stress. So, ransoming is even more stress IMO. I really like updating on a schedule. "Tuesday, I'm updating this story on Tuesday." Which causes its own type of stress. So, *Sigh* I've made it a point to not post anything until it's finished now. And this means I've got stuff in progress I'd love to post and share, but don't dare because I don't want to get burnt out again.

They may not have it on the profile page anymore, but it is in the author tools, under "Traffic".

It makes me giddy seeing how many countries I have reading my stuff. And hit counts help when I'm feeling down on myself. Seeing a specific number of visits every day I update really gives me a huge boost. Regular readers! *gasp*

when it first came out for stats, and yeah, it was still under traffic, I remember you could only get it for your author's profile, and not for individual stories. But like I said, I haven't posted in several years now (ugh stress, WIPS) so haven't checked lately.

It is such a high though. I mean. YAY!
