This whole "writing for yourself" thing is a common saying, but it's also overrated and I think people say it without really thinking it through. It's perfectly okay to write for other reasons than to amuse yourself. Go into a bookstore and you'll see any number of writers doing it for money. I'm not saying money was their only motivation, but it was a big one-- otherwise quite a few of them would need to do other things in order to pay the rent.

It's okay to write for an audience. Sometimes writers want that social aspect of writing, and that's fine. It's okay to write in hopes people will cheer you on. Sometimes writers need that encouragement to keep going. Writers don't have to listen to anyone who says "you should write for yourself only".

Please stop telling writers that's the only legitimate motivation for writing. They can write for whatever reason they want.

I ♥ you.

Uh, you do realize that most writers DO do other things in order to pay the rent, right? The vast majority of writers don't earn that much money from their writing; they keep doing it because they love writing, not because it's making them a ton of cash.

It's the rare few who manage to do well enough to be able to write and do nothing else.

Yes, I know. That's why I said "I'm not saying money was their only motivation, but it was a big one-- otherwise quite a few of them would need to do other things in order to pay the rent."

I don't see where we're disagreeing. The fact that a lot of writers have other sources of income doesn't at all contradict what I said about writers having different motivations for what they do.
