Re: genres you only enjoy in certain formats
The exceptions are if it's only part of the larger story (ie, following characters through the period that includes the war); or if it's specifically spy/mystery fiction, in which I take it it very much on a case-by-case basis.

The Forever War is pretty much military fiction, but it's also sci-fi and really good. It isn't blasty blasty pow pow alien guts ancronym

I have a significantly harder time following a story about wartime strategies/diplomacy, battles, or front-line-life stuff in the written form. I don't really know why. That sort of thing needs a visual element to hold my interest. I do better with Home Front stories, but that's usually due to the lack of military tropes.
