I personally knew nothing about Free or the fandom. With that said...
Rin seemed OK to me, I even read some of his wiki. But even I could see there was a widespread negative sentiment.

I remember RinHaru was dismissed as a "rival shipping" cliche too.

I also figured, the most popular pairing didn't involve Rin for a good reason right? So I went with that. I basically assumed the worst about him.

Re: fanservice. I felt embarrassed listening to the song. I'm in the same boat as you. It was upbeat but had some type of soft passion to it? omg I know the vocalists are straight but sorry

RinHaru did seem like a classic rival ship at first, but it turned out to be way more complicated than that.

But I'm so terribly confused here. If you know nothing about Free!, why are you thinking about RinHaru? Just go watch the show and decide if they're worth shipping or not.
