No, the Holmes stories aren't purposefully subtexty. That does not mean one cannot read them as such, without imputing authorial intent (I always pretend [emphasis pretend] that they are a couple but Doyle doesn't know). It feels (correct me if I'm wrong) that "ranting" implies you are somehow offended by the idea that characters you love might be slashed. In which case, side-eyeing you hard.

I'm not at all offended when people ship them, and your way of going about it, pretending they're gay behind Doyle's back, is a very elegant way of dealing with it.
What "offends" me and inspires lengthy monologues is the idea that they're gay in canon and that Doyle is somehow the god of "early" gay representation, and this comes from a misunderstadning of the context and the culture the stories came from.

(I am very very pro headcanon and pro slash. When I say that the Holmes stories have no subtext, I'm not making a moral judgement, I'm not saying it's good that there's no subtext or that shipping the characters somehow ruins something, I'm simply saying that Doyle put no subtext there)
