I've gone cave diving.

That's kickass. Did you like it?

Yeah it was amazing. Somewhat marred by an inexperienced diver in the group who reaaalllly shouldn't have been there (but lied to the guide about her previous dive experience to go) panicking for the first bit and unable to maintain neutral buoyancy, but once she settled down it was incredible. Normal diving feels more like hiking around and watching the scenery; this was more like exploring abandoned ruins. Totally different animals, too.

Abandoned ruins are great. Where did you go to cave dive?

Cool! Did/do you live in Japan then?

I do live in Japan! In Kyoto (at the moment I'm spending summer vacation back in Canada, though, where it isn't 40 degrees).

Jealous. I want to go to Japan. I want to see the Golden Pavilion and the giant statue of Buddha. What's your favorite part of the country?

Kyoto's much greener, but Tokyo was more convenient and had a lot more shit going on. I like both Kansai and Kanto, but I also have a soft spot for Hokkaido because it's packed with nature, a lot cooler, and a lot more like Canada.

Hahah my apartment is a five minute walk from the Golden Pavilion.

Are most Japanese cities easy to walk around in? I mean physically. A lot anime shows the city landscape as conducive to walking/biking and I've wondered about that for a while.

Super jealous about you living close to the Golden Pavilion.

It's very conducive to biking and there's public transportation just about everywhere, but walking (lol) Japanese people hate walking, or something. The number one reason for bike theft (itself the number one crime in Japan) is someone just being too damned lazy to walk, and numerous friends/colleagues/coworkers have told me that anything over 15 minutes is just not a tenable foot transportation distance.

But yes, it actually is easy to walk around if you don't hate going places on foot as an ingrained cultural character trait or something.

That's...new. I've never heard of that before and it's bizarre. My brother's first wife was Japanese and she didn't have a problem walking.
That's weird.

Also, it's a peaceful country when bike theft is your number one crime.

It boggled my mind when I first got here, too, since I always think of Japanese people as so much more mobile than your average North American with a BMI north of 30 cruising through the drivethrough at the bank ;p

It turns out that while Japanese people are on the whole much thinner, I wouldn't actually say they're on the whole any more active or fit, to be honest. At least not moreso than someone in the West who lives in a city where they have to bike or walk some of the time and eats relatively well. A hike up a small hill just about killed some of my fellow grad students here, whereas back home when I was doing my masters' an array of mostly white students manage to hike with me just fine, and they were many, many pounds heavier.

This is all just observation and anecdata, of course. Someone who lives a more or less sedentary life back home might think Japanese people walk a whole lot.
