So it's bad for people to own slaves, but it's also bad for white people to free slaves? And it's bad for the former slaves to be grateful to the person who freed them?

I understand that outside the fictional world in question, the image has mass amounts of associated baggage, but I will never feel that it is wrong for anybody to free slaves, no matter the color of the liberator, or of the slave.

The argument is that it's bad to write a story where a magical white outsider frees all the slaves, single-handedly and without any moral complications.

We are not living in Westeros.

One, the advantage and the flaw of working in a televisual medium is that images matter.

Second, it's admittedly been quite some time since I read the book, but I don't recall anything complicating things in a racial direction specifically.

So I don't know how much any of that goes to ameliorate this problem specifically. Of course, I don't think it's all that big of a problem; it's a shitty, poorly-chosen shot with bad implications, but nothing's perfect.

Not a racial direction, but definitely a cultural one. It's pretty clear in the books she doesn't understand the culture of the people she's trying to rule, and that's causing problems for the very people she's trying to help.

but, well, in the books it would have to be cultural since I got the impression that there was a racial mix in the cities she freed. whereas on TV...

I feel like maybe you're kinda sorta missing the point here. Nobody is saying it's bad to free slaves. NOBODY. So you can put down that argument, because your earnest counterargument is not required.

The problem lies in that Great White Savior is a racist cliché, that freedom for a bunch of brown-skinned savages is only possible via an enlightened white person. Also, it's not just that this scenario comes with "mass amounts of associated baggage", but that it's a scenario that has a near monopoly on ANY story that involves freeing of slaves.

Again: NOBODY IS SAYING IT'S BAD TO FREE SLAVES OR THAT WHITE PEOPLE ARE BAD FOR DOING IT. NOBODY.

She's not particularly enlightned...she just has a bigger army. And dragons. She doesn't come in with any particular ~grand wisdom~ or anything, just brute force. Don't think that's particularly admirable, but whatever, that's me.
