Would that even be allowed on AO3? That's not a fic.

AO3 shot itself in the foot by proclaiming from the start that it's not just for fics, but ~all kinds of transformative fanworks~ (because they wanted vids and art and meta there too), but now the end result is that shit like this or even more pointless shit gets posted and it's never clear what's "allowed" or not.

I wouldn't mind if the fucking filters weren't so horribly broken.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Totally useless by now: by trying to avoid the controversy of codifying the tagging system in a logical fashion, the AO3 PTB have ensured that the filters cannot work...

I have found numerous inconsistencies such as the number of A/B items being significantly different from the number of B/A items, etc.

Because AO3 is not restricted to fanfiction. It's a place to post TRANSFORMATIVE WORKS.

Freeform tag with the crowd already.

I know that you can post transformative fanworks on AO3, but this isn't even specific to any fandom, it's just a prompt. Although someone above said that it's already been deleted.

It's specific though. OP whiteouted the fandom references and usernames is all.

Anywho, what I meant was that it's such a broad term that it's hard to define what isn't a fanwork. I could post an interpretive dance about the Muppets set to kpop, and it'd probably count.

Ah yeah, you're right about the whiting out. And I'd be down for some Muppet kpop.

I don't think prompts are what the AO3 had in mind though.

Given how leaving authors notes or a summary in the tags is acceptable according to the site, I don't expect the site to be clear or rigid about much.

Wait. What's the whole Freeform thing?

I started using AO3 for the first time recently, and one of my tags automatically got the word "freeform" attached. I was like, "what?" But the intended audience has been finding the fic, so I haven't really concerned myself with it. After this comment, however, I'm interested in finding out what the term refers to on the site.

I've been using AO3 from day one and I am just as confused as you.

As far as I can tell, it's just one more way to ensure filtering will not work on AO3...

Freeform is any "extra" tag that's not Relationship, Character, or Fandom. As to why -freeform got added, that happens when you put something in the additional tags that's already a canonical tag in another category, because tags have to be unique.

Sorry this is a stupid example, but suppose your fic involved drifting cherry blossom petals and you decided to tag it "sakura." Sakura is the name of a character in several fandoms, so that tag name is "taken" and your tag would become sakura-freeform. Does that make sense? See also here:

ayrt

Well, that makes it even stranger, then, because the tag I used is specific to my fandom. :-/

Ahh, thank you for the explanation, though.
