I'm not going to dogpile you, OP

(Anonymous) 2014-07-31 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)That said, let's recommend some Asian movies!
If you dig on kung fu, the recent Ip Man film with Donnie Yen (and its sequel) are fun as hell, and Donnie Yen is just generally the shit. The Raid: Redemption is also a ton of fun if you like, just, two hours of crazy-ass violence. And Ong Bak is a good place to start with the physical miracle that is Tony Jaa.
If you like romance, basically ANYTHING by Wong Kar-Wai. Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is also just a beautiful sad love story, for those of us who happen to be suckers for sad love stories.
If you like nutty pulp adventure, I'd recommend K-20: The Fiend With 20 Faces. It's like if the Shadow and Darkman had a kid and the kid got really into parkour.
If you dig horror, there's a world of J-horror and K-horror waiting to keep you up at night. Ju-On is one of the scariest things I've yet seen, and A Tale Of Two Sisters is AMAZINGLY eerie in a very quiet, slow-build way.
Finally, I'm not even sure how to categorize Clash of Empires. Historical/mythological/fantasy/action-adventure? It's freakin' crazy, and awesome as hell.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:00 am (UTC)(link)Embarrassment is just your brain's way of telling you you can do better.
Re: I'm not going to dogpile you, OP
(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:10 am (UTC)(link)The Joy Luck Club movie. The book is also good, but the movie has one of the largest Chinese casts for an American movie I've ever seen.
Anything by Akira Kurosawa, but especially Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Rashomon, The Hidden Fortress and Throne of Blood

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:41 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, they might make that mistake again. You know why? Because people sometimes look like other people.
I know there's that whole, "they all look the same" bullshit, but man, people make that kind of mistake with members of their own race. The truth is that, even though there is a lot of diversity between individuals, there's a lot of similarities as well, and sometimes enough things are similar (or strike someone as similar at first glance) that people fuck up. Telling someone that they can stop that by "watching more media with Asian casts" is disingenuous and honestly, I think it's more problematic than making a mistake.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 01:15 am (UTC)(link)OP AGAIN.
(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 01:43 am (UTC)(link)I was upset when I read the first few comments but honestly? Before I even scrolled down to read them, I looked at the secret and realized it was actually pretty awful. Because Kim Jong Il was a brutal dictator responsible for the suffering of millions, and Emily Takei was most likely a wonderful lady who suffered quite a bit in the internment camps. That, combined with the thought that George Takei would see this made me uncomfortable. So that's why I had it taken down.
I can see why people thought I was saying "all Asians look alike" but on the other hand, if I wanted to say that I would have made a secret saying that.
I'm getting out of this thread. I hope people see this.
