Movie/TV recs is an excellent idea!

The Joy Luck Club movie. The book is also good, but the movie has one of the largest Chinese casts for an American movie I've ever seen.

Anything by Akira Kurosawa, but especially Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Rashomon, The Hidden Fortress and Throne of Blood

Ikiru is probably the one movie I'd save if all other evidence of human life were going to be destroyed.
