Random old fandom websites you remember

[personal profile] loracarol 2014-07-31 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you ever just randomly remember an old fandom website that stuck out to you for one reason or another? For me it was this website for Slayers, and in it the OP went on a long rant about how Lina Inverse was not, in fact, a red head as people claimed, but instead a brunette.

Obviously.

Now, I don't know if this website was made pre-anime, or if there was a point in time where Lina was a brunette, but I ran into the website after watching the anime where she was clearly a redhead, and that's really why is still sticks out to me, because of how over the top it was in defending the purity of a brunette Lina Inverse.

Anyone else have an old fandom website that sticks out for any reason?

It was SOME Geocities Redwall website that had little pixellated Redwall figures...I think the OC who ran it was Snowdrop....

Also; Any Xanga.

Those sound kind of cute. Awwww. Were they cute or hellaciously creepy?

Xanga? I'm assuming it isn't some epic manga about Xena: Warrior Princess, yeah? :P

Basically all the old sites mentioned here: http://fanlore.org/wiki/Mulder/Krycek_Romantics_Association.

It was my early descent into slashdom.

The original HP porn den, pornish_pixies. My family only had one computer with internet, so I would find fics that looked promising, C&P them into a doc titled "pirates", and put that onto a floppy disc. Then I would delete what I'd added to "pirates" and the browser history. Later I would read "pirates" on my own computer. So sneaky!

Once I had a computer that would only take floppies, but I never thought about c+p fic to one from the family computer.

...I don't even know if our family computer ever took floppies, or if it was too new for that. ._.?

My early days on the internet... I started out in Sailor Moon fandom, and through this fandom discovered the "Mr. T vs." and "Ate My Balls" memes, before such things were known as memes. I spent so long laughing my head off at those stupid things...

They weren't always called memes? :P

But yeah, I love those, they're dumb sometimes, but they're kind of funny too. :D

It's not really that old but I miss Potter Sues. I think Mary Sues are so adorable and I loved finding a place where the person posting them had the same attitude toward them as me instead of raging about them.

I remember a bunch of old Hamtaro fansites from when I was eight or so. There are a couple in particular that still stand out, like one that was dedicated to a single character. Apparently the web-owner shipped that character with her brother, and that was my accidental, horrifying introduction to hamster incest. Yay.

Gundam Wing, Aishiteru, located at "yaoijanai.com". My favorite of all GW sites because it was one of the few places that didn't have m/m slash, which I wasn't interested in at the time, or encouraged Relena bashing. I submitted my very first fanfics there, ah, memories.

I mostly remember a lot of the pairing shrines, because other than ff.net(which I didn't discover for a while when I first went looking for fic) they were the only places where I could find shippy fic.

All the old Star Trek FuhQFest stuff on Geocities.

So much fun.

Mostly the Rurouni Kenshin slash sites (I was SO into Saitou/Sanosuke even though the majority of fic was terrible. Something about that antagonistic pairing drew me in) and Metal Gear slash.

I remember making my own websites (LOTR, anime) but they never got any traffic because I failed spectacularly.

KS Nichols ran a site that had links to slash fic sites by fandom. That place was a lifesaver for me when I first discovered fandom and slash in the late 90s.

... were my entry points to online fandom.

(And say what you will about card games, I have never had as much fun/felt as comfortable in any other fandom as I did in YGO.)

Oh my god, Shinigami.net. Simultaneously introduced me to Gundam Wing and yaoi. In retrospect, the stuff there was hideously cliched and there was a LOT of Relena bashing, but it also had episode guides and other fun stuff.

Does anyone remember the Gundam Wing site shinigami.org? I loved that site, particularly the top ten lists.

This is going to date me so hardcore buuut...

Sailor Moon Universe. And if anyone from here actually remembers that place in its heyday...I'm sorry, for everything. >_>

I was so into that site and all the stupid drama that revolved around it. I hadn't even seen but a couple of Sailor Moon episodes that randomly aired over Thanksgiving with that chick dressed up as her hosting it. Toonami hadn't picked it up to air it locally. I was actually considering doing the send someone a VHS and $5 and they dub episodes for you and send a script along with it thing.

Tomb of the Little Known Senshi

Apparently it was so popular that it still exists in its archived form. The only downside is that it no longer has midis autoplaying on every page. I remember Sailor Lead Crow's page was "Sweet Dreams" from the Eurhythmics.

ff.net in its heyday, bacl when we had actual ratings and not those foofy vague as shit ones along with the NC-17 rating.

The entirety of the Anime Web Turnpike, namely the Gundam Wing/Sailor Moon/Inuyasha sites. Oh and pokemon sites. SO MANY GOOD ASH/GARY SITES THAT HAVE JUST...POOFED OUT OF EXISTANCE. D:
