Fictional Characters who are/were addicted to something

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
List all the fictional characters you can remember who have (or had in the past) an addiction to anything -- drugs, alcohol, gambling, whatever. Also, if possible, mention how this addiction plays out in fanfic (if there's a fandom).

I'm doing an Big Nerdy Fandom Essay on stuff like this, and I would appreciate some memory-jogging ;)

shouldn't you do your own research, if you're gonna be taking credit for it anyways? maybe that's harsh of me but that first paragraph just comes off as really demanding, idk.

I won't be taking credit for it though, I'm going to link here, obviously.

It's a fan essay. On my LJ. For fun. Not something academic or official.

This is a really weird comment.

Nate Ford on Leverage is a functional alcoholic. Tony Stark's a recovering alcoholic in the comics, functional alcoholic in the movies. In The Golden Age storyline, Hourman developed a serious addiction to the Miraclo pills that gave him his powers. Carol Danvers is a recovering alcoholic. I think it's fair to say that Harold, Kumar, and The Dude all have some level of dependence on weed.

Plus damn near everyone in the 40s and 50s smoked.

Well Speedy, Green Arrow's sidekick, was infamously a drug addict. Tony Stark also has had a long struggle with alcoholism (which was replaced by PTSD in the MCU). I'm coming up with blanks for other comic characters that were a long term thing and not some one-off thing, but I'm pretty sure there are a few others.

Bubs and McNutty off The Wire, at the very least.

Don Draper is an alcoholic. (Spoilers?) In the last two seasons we see how it actually affects his life. His marriage begins to collapse (and drags on terribly), he scars one his kids by getting caught sleeping with a neighbor by said kid, his work is going to the shitter, and at the end of the sixth season he's put on leave because his drinking began interfering with his work in a really bad way. The seventh season has him trying to cut down on his drinking while trying to save his job and his personal life (surprise [as in it's not a surprise], he works extra hard with his job and is able to keep it going but his marriage to his hewer wife fails but he is able to mend a really bad relationship with his daughter a little bit).

Actually, Mad Men has a lot of great plots with people dealing with addiction of some sort, mostly alcohol, though.

Recently, I remember seeing a Jackie Chan film where he played a thief with a gambling addiction. I think he's played a former cop with an alcohol addiction too.

All the ones that come to mind atm. Some of these are debatable about whether they were really addicted or not, but they're at least often portrayed as being addicted in fanfic:

Sherlock Holmes (ACD Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock, Elementary) - cocaine
John Watson (ACD) - gambling
Gregory House (House) - vicodin
Willow Rosenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - magic (does that count?)
Kenneth Hutchinson (Starsky & Hutch) - heroin
Speedy (Green Arrow comics) - heroin
Tony Stark (Marvel comics) - alcohol
Renee Montoya (DC comics) - alcohol

T'Pol on Enterprise was addicted to...emotions (it was weird) at one point.

On SPN Dean is an alcoholic, Sam was addicted to demon blood, Cas was addicted to eating souls.

Archer and his mother are both alcoholics.

The Supernatural entry makes me think of the Arson, Murder and Jaywalking trope:

"Hi, I'm Sam and I'm addicted to demon blood."

"Hi Sam!"

"Hi, I'm Castiel, and I'm addicted to eating souls."

"Hi Castiel!"

"Hi, I'm Dean and I'm an alcoholic."

"...Oh. Is that all?"

Don't forget demon Crowley shooting up with human blood.

Bob Stokey from The Walking Dead was an alcoholic, as was Hershel Greene. Merle Dixon of the same show was a drug addict, but I don't remember if they told what drugs.

Dani Reese from Life was addicted to drugs and spends most of the series battling alcoholism.

I don't think Hershel was necessarily an alcoholic. Yeah, he may have gotten drunk in Nebraska, but honestly, I don't blame him after realizing the true nature of the Walkers and that all those family and friends he thought he was trying to save were, in reality gone. After Nebraska, you don't really see him with hardy any alcohol again (not that there was really much at there where the group was going in S3 and 54.).

Jesse Pinkman (Breaking Bad) was addicted to various drugs including crystal meth and heroin.

Michael Garibaldi (Babylon 5) was addicted to alcohol pre-canon, then started drinking again after going through some hinky shit.
Dr. Stephen Franklin (also Babylon 5) become addicted to stimulants (to stay alert while working long hours). He was able to kick the habit after a lot of soul searching and a near death experience.

I don't know how fic treats these addictions as I don't read fic about these characters.

then started drinking again after going through some hinky shit.

I first read this as "after going through some kinky shit" and I was like "wait how did I miss that episode?"

Rincewind from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. He was addicted to oxygen. He got hooked on it at an early age and didn't want to give it up.

Roxy and later Rose from Homestuck are alcoholics, Gamzee and later Terezi have a similar problem with "sopor slime" and Faygo.

How it plays out in fanfic: People forget Roxy's other character traits and ignore that she canonically sobered up. She's the token hilarious drunk.

Dr. Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds was addicted to Dilaudid (after being kidnapped and drugged by his kidnapper). I know there were fics that dealt with it, but don't remember any in particular. And in the show it just sort of...went away.

On Burn Notice, Michael's brother Nate Westen has a gambling addiction, which he manages to varying degrees of success throughout the series (moving to Las Vegas was probably a poor choice on his part).

Let's see, who hasn't been mentioned...

--Crichton on Farscape was using something called lakka for a while, but it's not clear whether he was addicted
--Warrick on CSI Las Vegas had a gambling addiction
--That Charlie guy on Lost was on... heroin?
--Oh, Damar on ST:DS9 had a serious drinking problem
--Does holodeck addiction count?

Gamzee is the first to come to mind.

He's addicted to sopor slime.

I imagine it would exist in most fanfics about him but not really be mentioned. If he gets taken off the slime he gets dangerous. And I don't just mean angry, I mean literally an insane, bloodthirsty murderer.

I've never read a fic where he's not on sopor, but they probably exist and the point of the fic is probably his violent behavior.

ETA: if it's relevant to what you're doing, Gamzee did go off the sopor once in canon and it resulted in him killing two of the other main characters until his moirail talked him down. (Shooshed him down?) He eventually got ahold of more slime.

on "Without A Trace", Danny Taylor was an alcoholic and Martin Fitzgerald became addicted to pain meds. There is a tiny, mostly defunct fandom and fanfiction is either used for major angst or something that binds them together.

I recently read a series of detective novels by the Irish writer Ken Bruen, where the main character, named Jack Taylor, is an extreme alcoholic. There are many, many graphic descriptions of the physical effects of alcohol and withdrawal, as well as other drugs.

I doubt there's a fandom, but the books are a quick, easy read, and they definitely deal with the subject of addiction, if that's what you're looking for.

There was a really intense episode of Starsky & Hutch ("The Fix", IIRC) where Hutch is forcibly hooked on heroin over the course of a week as an interrogation technique so he'll divulge information in his need for a fix. After he escapes, Starsky and Huggy forcibly unaddict him over 48 hours of pure cold-turkey hell.

I can't remember any off-hand, but given the intensity of the episode and the fact that it's the hurt/comfort motherlode, I'm pretty sure there was fanfic featuring the episode's events.
