(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:24 am (UTC)(link)It's a fan essay. On my LJ. For fun. Not something academic or official.
This is a really weird comment.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 12:21 am (UTC)(link)Actually, Mad Men has a lot of great plots with people dealing with addiction of some sort, mostly alcohol, though.
Recently, I remember seeing a Jackie Chan film where he played a thief with a gambling addiction. I think he's played a former cop with an alcohol addiction too.

On SPN Dean is an alcoholic, Sam was addicted to demon blood, Cas was addicted to eating souls.
Archer and his mother are both alcoholics.

"Hi Castiel!"
"Hi, I'm Dean and I'm an alcoholic."
"...Oh. Is that all?"

Michael Garibaldi (Babylon 5) was addicted to alcohol pre-canon, then started drinking again after going through some hinky shit.
Dr. Stephen Franklin (also Babylon 5) become addicted to stimulants (to stay alert while working long hours). He was able to kick the habit after a lot of soul searching and a near death experience.
I don't know how fic treats these addictions as I don't read fic about these characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 01:51 am (UTC)(link)How it plays out in fanfic: People forget Roxy's other character traits and ignore that she canonically sobered up. She's the token hilarious drunk.

--Warrick on CSI Las Vegas had a gambling addiction
--That Charlie guy on Lost was on... heroin?
--Oh, Damar on ST:DS9 had a serious drinking problem
--Does holodeck addiction count?
Re: Fictional Characters who are/were addicted to something
He's addicted to sopor slime.
I imagine it would exist in most fanfics about him but not really be mentioned. If he gets taken off the slime he gets dangerous. And I don't just mean angry, I mean literally an insane, bloodthirsty murderer.
I've never read a fic where he's not on sopor, but they probably exist and the point of the fic is probably his violent behavior.
ETA: if it's relevant to what you're doing, Gamzee did go off the sopor once in canon and it resulted in him killing two of the other main characters until his moirail talked him down. (Shooshed him down?) He eventually got ahold of more slime.

I recently read a series of detective novels by the Irish writer Ken Bruen, where the main character, named Jack Taylor, is an extreme alcoholic. There are many, many graphic descriptions of the physical effects of alcohol and withdrawal, as well as other drugs.
I doubt there's a fandom, but the books are a quick, easy read, and they definitely deal with the subject of addiction, if that's what you're looking for.
Re: Fictional Characters who are/were addicted to something
(Anonymous) 2014-08-01 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)I can't remember any off-hand, but given the intensity of the episode and the fact that it's the hurt/comfort motherlode, I'm pretty sure there was fanfic featuring the episode's events.
