Into the Woods

[personal profile] teaphile 2014-08-01 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
So, now that the first trailer's out, what do you think? Will it suck, or be as brilliant as the stage version? Somewhere in between?

I have my doubts about it, starting with casting an actual child as Red. That brings whole new levels of creepy to her scenes with the wolf, not to mention gutting the coming of age aspects of I Know Things Now. And they seem to be hiding that it's a musical, which is an odd choice.

But I watched the trailer and heard the music and got all excited and...maybe I should just watch the American Playhouse version instead.

I really like the instrumentals. I'm not familiar with the musical, but everyone just looks ill cast. I see Chris Pine, I see Anna Kendrick, I don't see whoever they're supposed to be. It looks like a costume party.

Oh good, it's not just me, then. I thought my preconceptions were getting in the way. But to be fair, you're not getting any dialogue in the trailer either, which is where all the personality is.

I can't link to imdb. It's on the front page.

I thought I heard the movie was going to cut out a lot of the mature stuff, including the wolf's song about Red, and the wife having sex with the Prince. Which... kind of makes me less interesting in getting excited about the movie.

I've tried three times to draft a response. I got nuthin'. That's weird and wrong.

Sondheim confirmed that 'Any Moment' is still in. Didn't see anything about 'Hello Little Girl' but I don't exactly blame Disney for wanting to cut out a subplot about child abuse so wtfever.

The trailer looks sort of...generic fantasy movie to me. I like the musical a lot but the trailer's not really giving me a feeling like the movie's going to do it justice.

Re: Into the Woods

It looks too expansive to me. Like there's no way everyone would meet up in that enormous wood and the plots won't coalesce the way they're supposed to.

Unless they're ignoring act two. Which is unforgivable.

Re: Into the Woods

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
There's a POV shot of the Giant's Wife attacking what looks like most of the cast, so they're not entirely jettisoning Act Two.

My hopes for this one have been sinking ever since they announced Johnny Depp was playing the Wolf, which means it's almost a certainty that they're going to overinflate the part.

I actually still like Johnny Depp but I got worried when I saw that big ol' 'and Johnny Depp' in the trailer. The Wolf's a fairly small part, so getting a big name and hyping him up as part of the cast is probably not a good sign. (I'm just thankful they didn't get that annoying Sophia Grace girl who's always on Ellen to play Red. That was the casting news that nearly broke me.)

I don't know... The trailers don't excite me. Into the Woods is my favorite musical but the atmosphere in the trailers just doesn't seem right. I'm just incredibly cynical about this adaptation, but I guess we'll have to see?

Re: Into the Woods

[identity profile] flipthefrog.livejournal.com 2014-08-02 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
My entire problem is, why do you have a trailer for a movie musical without any singing?

Re: Into the Woods

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-08-02 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they kept the plot and not the music? Which I think would be weird because the plot depends a fair bit on stage-meta.

Re: Into the Woods

[identity profile] flipthefrog.livejournal.com 2014-08-02 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
let's be real here, if they were cutting the singing, they wouldn't have cast Anna Hendrix or the rest of the Broadway vets, they would have just pulled more big name actors. And yeah, the complete lack of Narrator since day one has bugged the hell out of me, since the entire play is about breaking free of the narratives.

I'm not familiar with the source material but just from seeing the trailer, I'm not wowed. It isn't much to look at or get excited over. Disney can do better.

I will see it regardless because Chris Pine is in it and I have a thing for him, (Including his voice; he has a nice singing voice, too.) but I'm not getting my hopes up or anything. I just want it to be half decent.

Re: Into the Woods

[identity profile] flipthefrog.livejournal.com 2014-08-02 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
chris pine is like my only ray of hope in this entire movie, because he is going to goddamn nail that part if the director is in any way competent.

I hope so! I've seen a fair number of Pine's films and even when the movies themselves aren't very impressive, I've always felt he did a good job. If nothing else I will be pleased with the costumes and singing, but I hope the script is good and everyone is well cast. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

(Does he play a douche prince with a heart of gold? Because he seems to get those roles often, lol.)

Re: Into the Woods

Besides my problem with there being no singing in the trailer, I'm... somewhat alarmed by the top billing Johnny Depp's getting in this thing despite the fact that the Wolf shows up for like three scenes. Like, I'm at the point where I'm hoping they've secretly cast him as the Narrator, because I'm also going to be highly pissed off if they've cut that character (I know, petty, but he's important to the meaning goddamn it).

Re: Into the Woods

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-08-02 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Which wouldn't make sense to cross those streams, because the whole joke is that the Wolf/Prince is horny and buffoonish no matter how he's costumed at the moment.

I didn't even realize until I read your comment that they've apparently cut the Narrator. Even less interested in this movie now. Dammit, Disney, couldn't you have ruined a musical I don't care about?

Maybe it's just the quality of the videos I've found, but I'm not at all impressed. The orchestra sounds like a midi arrangement, and there's nothing of the intricacies I love in Sondheim.

Also, it still bugs me that they made the wolf and the prince separate people. That's The Point of the character. Siiigh.
