Umm, no, they're really not. They're thinking about shipping their favorite characters for fun. Not everybody is obsessed with analyzing every asepct of popular culture through the lens of their own personal social crusade, and it's really, really shitty of you lot to demand that everyone should.

Yeah, fuck those people. How dare they demand equal representation and respect through the media they consume. They should just shut the fuck up and just watch maybe the only character they've EVER seen that's like them be shipped in a heterosexual relationship just like the entire rest of the planet that hates them.

Shipping doesn't exist in a vacuum, kinks don't exist in a vacuum, this stuff has real world implications. JFC.

Nothing exists in a vacuum, sure, but can you explain the complicated relationships between why certain kinks are so popular. Saying "nothing exists in a vacuum" doesn't help your case unless you can explain why it doesn't and how that affects the other things. Anything else is just obvious.

Shipping doesn't exist in a vacuum

I was wondering when someone would finally trot out that tired line. Usually when we have this wank, someone does it within the first few posts. I'm impressed by our restraint this time!

And no, shipping and fanfiction doesn't have real world implications. If it did, you can bet that I would be pretty eager to run in the opposite direction from people who write things like omegaverse and vore. But no, they're just regular people who get off on somewhat odd things.

Seeing a character who's like you being shipped in a certain way doesn't effect the canon, which is still representative.

Also, while I think there are some trends in shipping that could be said to be troublesome (e.g. the fact that people seem to avoid shipping black characters), I don't think shipping a homosexual character as heterosexual is one of them, for two reasons: it's not a major trend, and shipping characters as homosexual is very prominent and popular. Really, I think it's got to be taken on a case-by-case basis.

Ah yes. The larger sociological implications of fan shipping. Truly one of the most serious threats to the advancement of gay rights around the world. It could have devastating consequences if allowed to continue unchecked. Perhaps even the governments of states and countries on the brink of liberalization of gay rights could be swayed back by the power of...some lesbian and a dude in an NBC horror series. Truly. I mean, it's SHIPPING.

And everyone knows shipping is serious business.
