This. Actually, if I had to pick one ship I hated more than any other ship, it's Superman/Wonder Woman, to be honest.

Mainly, it's the 37846376582 Elseworlds in which Lois is conveniently killed off and then it's portrayed as a good thing for Supes and Wondy to get together not because they develop some kind of genuine relationship, but because they're So Much Better than humans and Humans Can't Understand and they Need to Populate the World with Superbabies and all that gross "don't associate with people who are beneath you" anti-heterogeneity, anti-non-superheroes shit that KEEPS coming up all the fucking time in ALL those Elseworlds just turned me 100% off any possibility for me to even consider it. Not to mention it seems to always go hand-in-hand with throwing out the fact that a huge part of what makes Superman's goodness and humility so believable is because his ties to normal humans like his parents and Lois and Jimmy and Perry and the people at his job are his strongest ones, not his ties to other superheroes.

And it's always so sexist too -- there's always this Red Sonja-ish "I must have a man who is stronger than me" thing going on with Wondy. She always gets turned into his love interest and gets chickified into the normal one whose function is to be Superman's Girlfriend rather than a hero in her own right. She always gets pregnant with an icky "I'm carrying a jackpot gene combo yessss!" vibe. I just really can't get over how the way this ship plays out is always so damn *gross*. I don't really think it *has* to be gross, but it pretty much always is.

And yes, I also love their friendship so much. Their friendship is so unique, while the ship is so predictable and cliched.

Yup, you have articulated all the problems I have with this ship, it's written in such a way that I have never seen a version of it I like, never mind the horrible fridging or outright ignoring of Lois that goes on in order to make Superman/Wonder Woman work.

(And my issues with it are purely canon-based, I've got no problem with people shipping it in like fandom or anything, but man do I knash my teeth when I see it happen in the comics.)

Yeah it's actually usually a lot better done in fanfic. Especially for stuff like the Justice League cartoon and things where there's more of a team dynamic, and it doesn't feel so much like some kind of Elizabethan-era political marriage between two separate empires.
