My psychology teacher claimed that the #1 factor friends are most likely to have in common, more than anything to do with race or sex or culture, is their relative level of wealth. He didn't cite a study for this, so I can't back it up (and odds are any such study would have been performed solely in one country--this might not apply in different cultural contexts), but it's an interesting proposition.

What he's claiming is a correlation, not a causation.

It makes sense that that would be the most common factor because you're more likely to see many more people of the same income level as you, than others. That doesn't mean that it's a big factor in compatibility, though. Only that there are more comparatively chances in which compatibility can be found.

Hm-mm, now that I think about it, I've made so many friends in a school where everybody came from the same background and not in prev schools.
