shoe laces

[personal profile] xalus 2014-08-02 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I have some colored laces I want to clean. I put them through the wash but they still have those black marks that I can't get out, even when I scrubbed them with an old toothbrush. Does anyone have any tricks? I can't use bleach, obviously. If I can't get the marks out, I'll just buy some more, but the kind I want are a little hard to track down, so I'm using that as a last resort.

Do you know what caused the marks? Are they on the surface only, or are they right through the thread?

It's usually residue from the metal grommets for laces. I would handwash them with some Woolite and warm water, then scrub with baking soda, see if that helped.

Ooh I didn't even think about baking soda. I'll let them soak for a bit and try that out, thanks!

Add vinegar, add the laces once the foaming stops, and let them soak 24 hours.

Some of them go through, some of them are just on the surface. They're the black marks made from the lace rubbing up against the eyelets.

You might be surprised about bleach. I was trying to get some stains out of a white costume piece last summer, and literally COULD NOT find any bleach in stores that wasn't billing itself as color-safe. I'm not sure HOW color-safe any given brand is, but apparently now they all think they are.

Hmm you're right, I checked, and our bleach is supposedly "color booster." I don't know how accurate that is, but I guess if I'm going to test that claim out on anything, a 99 cent pair of shoelaces would be best. I'll try that next.

Color-BOOSTER, huh? Well, that sounds even more promising. If the above tips don't work (and yeah, baking soda is generally pretty good, especially combined with vinegar to lift out stuff that's really ground in), good luck! Especially since I'd feel bad if I encouraged you to try and it wound up not being color-safe. :P

I have this suspicion that I won't feel properly grown-up until I understand how to use bleach in the laundry without ruining anything.

Since it's all allegedly color-safe now, I really don't quite understand how it's significantly different than detergent... but I'm still a little wary of using it on colored stuff. So I pretty much don't use it, except for household cleaning, since I assume there's still some bacteria/virus-killing action going on there.
