You might be surprised about bleach. I was trying to get some stains out of a white costume piece last summer, and literally COULD NOT find any bleach in stores that wasn't billing itself as color-safe. I'm not sure HOW color-safe any given brand is, but apparently now they all think they are.

Hmm you're right, I checked, and our bleach is supposedly "color booster." I don't know how accurate that is, but I guess if I'm going to test that claim out on anything, a 99 cent pair of shoelaces would be best. I'll try that next.

Color-BOOSTER, huh? Well, that sounds even more promising. If the above tips don't work (and yeah, baking soda is generally pretty good, especially combined with vinegar to lift out stuff that's really ground in), good luck! Especially since I'd feel bad if I encouraged you to try and it wound up not being color-safe. :P

I have this suspicion that I won't feel properly grown-up until I understand how to use bleach in the laundry without ruining anything.

Since it's all allegedly color-safe now, I really don't quite understand how it's significantly different than detergent... but I'm still a little wary of using it on colored stuff. So I pretty much don't use it, except for household cleaning, since I assume there's still some bacteria/virus-killing action going on there.
