(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)I may not be Dickens, but more people are apt to find a story if there are regular updates. Posting a completed work all at once, especially in a large fandom, means that it won't find as big an audience because it quickly gets buried by everything else. That's why I post serially, even though the work itself is complete on my hard drive.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)A while ago I was posting a WIP and frankly a little lost about an element of the plot. Someone made a critical comment about my use of a minor character that inspired a completely new take on the plot. If I hadn't posted that as a WIP I don't think I'd have finished what turned out to be my favourite story.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)Yes, this is a good point: it accounts for the fact that so many fics which are trash collect tons of kudos while masterpieces disappear with a minimum number of kudos. I hate this phenomenon, because it means that you cannot use either the number of kudos or the number of comments as an indicator of the quality of a fic. Seriously, it makes me itch for a -1 kudo button sometimes...
But then again, most people have learned to filter out WIPs which has the advantage of tremendously shortening your read list in popular fandoms: it's particularly easy on AO3, though much harder on other platforms, I'll grant you.
