I'm... pretty sure most of the first paragraph is actually just factual. Like, yep, that's how things are.

I agree on most of the other stuff too (although I have no feelings about the Kardashians one way or another, except that I always think of them as Cardassians and it amuses me because my sense of humor is v juvenile) but people are always going to be angry at this stuff the same way this stuff is always going to exist. At some point there's just no use in getting angry about it.

+1.

I also don't have any feelings on Kardashians beyond, "They exist, good for them" because I don't keep up with their lives or particularly care. I don't understand why some people get so infuriated about these celebs, but I can get being tired of hearing about them.

People watch though, and as long as people watch these shows are going to air. *shrugs*

Well, if that's true, shouldn't more pop culture critics and sophisticates realize this stuff was designed to be bitched about and therefore not dance like puppets in the hands of KK's PR team/the Jersey Shore producers?

That was me, OP, by the way.

I think a lot of pop culture critics and sophisticates do realize the stuff was designed to be bitched about, at least on some level. But it still goes on, for a number of reasons, I think. Some people get dragged into it even though they realize it's manufactured - they still get invested in it, or angry at it, or whatever. They just can't help themselves. Some people just don't care and treat it as a guilty pleasure. And of course if you're talking about people within the media, there's an extremely strong incentive to have something to say about anything that's remotely popular in pop culture so that you can get clicks. People writing for media sources are just as capable of being cynical as people who make reality television.

I'm sure there's many other reasons too, those are just the first ones to come to mind.

I just wish people would own it. If you like/follow reality shows and their stars, it's perfectly fine. They're pretty much semi-improvised soaps and soaps have been popular for decades (I understand, I used to love Days of Our Lives and still watch Lifetime movies.) Just be honest with yourself (or your readers.)

And if you really, truly hate them, then don't give them free press. I just hate seeing people congratulating themselves on how awesome they are for not liking something.
