I'm... pretty sure most of the first paragraph is actually just factual. Like, yep, that's how things are.

I agree on most of the other stuff too (although I have no feelings about the Kardashians one way or another, except that I always think of them as Cardassians and it amuses me because my sense of humor is v juvenile) but people are always going to be angry at this stuff the same way this stuff is always going to exist. At some point there's just no use in getting angry about it.

Reality shows generally fall into two categories: a) people you can look up to and b) people you can look down on, sometimes both.

So you're right, a whole large section of these shows actually thrive on that - candidates are specifically selected for it (trust me, it was actually one of my jobs to select candidates for a reality show). It's no different for celebrities - drama, conflict - that's the shit that sells your crappy, cheap show.

I kind of agree tbh. I don't care about any of the famous people who get routinely complained about and the only reason I know anything about them is because of people constantly making a fuss that they exist.

I feel ya, OP. I don't watch or need to watch any of the shows you mention but I swear, whenever there's an article about them, especially Kim Kardashian, people rush to comment about how they "don't care" and "can't they report REAL news?"

Last I heard, if someone didn't care, they wouldn't go to the trouble of clicking and commenting.

But my absolute 'favorite' is when these people, who judge themselves so morally superior to the Kardashians, don't hesitate to use the most vile names imaginable about another human being they don't approve of.

Makes me so embarrassed to be a part of the same species.

I've never seen a single episode of anything Kardashian, and I still have no idea what, besides the former Olympian, made anyone offer them a TV show... But I think Kim Kardashian is just astonishingly physically beautiful. She looks completely vacuous, I actually can't imagine her *speaking*, even, but I think she's ridiculously lovely to look at.

With that in mind, I can't exactly criticize anyone for watching her show!

(Honey Boo Boo, now, I don't watch either, but only because the family looks like such fun in the previews that I'm afraid the show won't live up to my hopes!)

Goooottta defend David Cassidy. He wasn't vacuous at all -- he's a guy who landed a gig when he was young, and wound up being typecast/controlled because of it. He hated the music that he made, but his desire to transition to more serious work wasn't taken seriously enough for him to be able to do it.

Am I still allowed to express disdain for reality TV on the account of how they approach editing? Whenever I've caught such shows at the gym, they always struck me as really boring. I suspect the best entertainment gold is hanging out on the cutting room floor.
