Reality shows generally fall into two categories: a) people you can look up to and b) people you can look down on, sometimes both.

So you're right, a whole large section of these shows actually thrive on that - candidates are specifically selected for it (trust me, it was actually one of my jobs to select candidates for a reality show). It's no different for celebrities - drama, conflict - that's the shit that sells your crappy, cheap show.
