Am I still allowed to express disdain for reality TV on the account of how they approach editing? Whenever I've caught such shows at the gym, they always struck me as really boring. I suspect the best entertainment gold is hanging out on the cutting room floor.

I think there are probably some interesting scenes left out but for the most part, I think it's the opposite. Most of the footage they get is probably pretty boring, so they only choose the most dramatic scenes. And in a lot of cases, they'll cut certain scenes out or manipulate them in such a way that the final product is more interesting than what really happened. Every once in a while, you'll a reality tv star who was the "rival" of someone else in a show talk about how they actually got along pretty well together but the editors only included scenes where it could be construed that they were arguing or didn't care for each other. There's also the fact that a lot of scenes in some "reality" shows were actually either scripted or the stars were directed to behave in a certain manner
