"16"

It gets so fucking ridiculous I love it

To be fair, I pretty much had my adult proportions by 16.

Did you look like Solid Snake though.

I'll accept a tall 16 year old w/o laughing. Not one that looks 40.

I was estimated to be about 19 at age 13...didn't look like Solid Snake, true, but people can really look older than they are.

Same. I was 5'8 with breasts/hips at thirteen. I dealt with a LOT of awkwardness while working when men would hit on me thinking I was 18/19+ and then finding out I was terribly underage. XD

I think very few 16yos have full facial hair

I've seen a few, actually.
Looking overly mature is more common with girls, but I've come across teen boys who really were pretty much jailbait as they look very mature for their age, facial hair, muscles and everything (it's less common, but not non-existant).

True story: When I was 24 or 25, I met this dude in the bar who I thought was very cute. Didn't go home with him that night, but he added me to facebook a day or two later, and we got to talking. As we were talking, it became apparent that he was still in high school, and when I asked why he was there, he told me he was 17. I had sworn that he was at least 23 - 25. And then I finally understood the true reason why underage kids shouldn't sneak into bars.

:O dodged a bullet there, huh?

True, but I didn't say there were none - just very few.

You haven't seen the kids at my daughter's high school. More guys walking around with scruff, beards, etc. then there EVER were in my HS, and there were still a couple of them back then.

And most of the girls look at least 20, it's beyond bizarre to me.

Scruff is common, especially with guys who wish they had a full beard, lol

Sure, but it's not like - a scattering, it's like...Derek Hale scruff. My daughter's new probably boy-friend has a full-on beard, and he's a senior this year like her.

Just....so weird, to me. These are all so *tall* and built and whatnot - in HS, we all pretty much looked weedy and awkward and scrawny/babyfat and stupid. The hair (hello, 80's big hair!) sure didn't help.

eh, I think some of that is probably perspective and culture. Like maybe when you were in HS it was more common to shave? I doubt people are actually taller/more physically mature now than they are then. (Unless people are starting school a bit later or something?)

I seem to recall reading some studies about how girls have been starting puberty earlier and earlier--possibly because of more hormones in the food and whatnot. That sounds plausible although I don't have any references....

It's been almost 30 years since i've been in HS and these kids? Just do not look like we did.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-04 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
I know one who did. We were the same age; I didn't believe he was 15 because he had a full beard and a stocky, thick build that makes you suspicious that he was in high school at all. But he showed me his ID and it blew my mind.

There are always outliers, I guess?

For a woman, that's pretty normal. Boys (often) fully mature a little bit later.
