Chocolate- European brands vs. American brands

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Lindt, Milka, Toblerone, etc
Vs.
Hersheys, Ghirardelli, Godiva, etc

Which is better?

Out of the specific brands that you've listed there, I would take the American ones because I love Ghirardelli.

but I really don't know much about European chocolate brands so I can't really make a call, I'm sure there's fantastic chocolate there that I just don't know about.

I've never eaten American chocolate, but I'd blow a guy for a Toblerone bar. The taste is incomparable to other chocolates imo.

I like Lindt and Ghiradelli, so... split? Lindt probably has the edge for me because of their coffee truffles.

(Darnit why does everyone have to talk about candy bars I can't eat today? ;_;)

European all the way. Kinder, Toblerone... We made a Toblerone cake once and I've never gotten over it.

I'd say mostly European, though I rally like Ghiradelli. Hersheys is awful though, both in taste and as a company. I refuse to buy their products.

I live in Belgium, so I'"m spoiled, and I don't really care much for foreign chocolate. My favorite brand is Cote D'Or for chocolate and Leonidas for pralines.

Of the above, I sort of like Toblerone but I'm indifferent at best to the rest.

Living in Scotland, but having family in america, means I can be more balanced, but my bias is towards the chocolate we can get here. And belgian chocolate is amazing.

A note, I like hershey's chocolate, but when a shop nearby started importing it, I heard a guy say it tasted like puke, and honestly I can understand why he'd think that. That HAS somewhat marred my appreciation for Hershey's chocolate.

european all the way. american chocolate is way too sweet for me (milka is almost too sweet too).

Personally, Hersheys is terrible. Godiva is okay, and I've never had Ghirardelli.

The only thing I find Americans do better than Europeans is add Peanut Butter. Other than that- European chocolates all the way.

I love them all. I love Kinder chocolates for Easter but there's nothing like Hersheys Kisses at Christmas time.

The only ones I know are Hershey's and Godiva, and I can't stand Godiva (too rich for me) so Hershey's it is.

(I know OF Toblerone but never had it.)

European, especially Swiss and German. I haven't had American chocolate very often, but those I know of are far too sweet for me. As is Milka, btw. - it's really a brand thing, I guess. My favourite is Hachez.

European all the way.

Lindt. Godiva is OK, but truffles only. For straightforward chocolate, Lindt. Swiss chocolate is known as the best chocolate in the world for a reason.

Toblerone only does the triangular milk bars with caramel bits, right? So they're more chocolate candy than chocolate and it's difficult to compare them with anything else.

Since I live near San Francisco, I wanted to like Ghirardelli, but personally I find their chocolate sub par in spite of their reputation and all my friends and colleagues agree, so... As far as I can tell, they have become a local byword for low-quality chocolate and are now considered a tourist trap. Possibly because I am a chocolate snob, surrounded by other snobs? I don't really think so though, because I love Sees Candies chocolate. Nope, I suspect Ghirardelli is truly over-rated.

Milka and Ghirardelli are fairly comparable, in that they are both extremely creamy (way too much for use in baking as chips or chunks, melted is fine) and both have devoted fanbases that I am on the outside of. It's okay, but not my first choice.

Lindt is good shit. Godiva is fine, although I don't like a lot of their fillings. And while Hershey is the "bad shit," I'm still probably gonna like it because of the nostalgia factor. Maybe not a plain Hershey bar, but I'm down with Special Dark and Mr. Goodbar.

I will probably be chided by some in this thread, but I don't like Toblerone. I would trade a Toberlone bar for good quality licorice.

I haven't tried most of these (which I am now extremely sad about because I love chocolate), so Lindt. Those truffles are amazing.

Hershey's I have found is just too sweet. Ghirardelli is good for their squares with different fillings but that's it. Godiva is just ok. Lindt yes please. I have not had Milka. I do like Ritter Sport.

I know Trader Joe's uses other manufactures but they have some really good chocolate bars. There a couple that are filled with either caramel or speculoos (there was a third but I don't remember what it was and haven't seen it). A few dark chocolate ones too. I've heard their big block bars of chocolate are great too for baking.

I haven't had Milka or Toberone, but I like other brands for different things. Godiva for fancy chocolate, Hershey's and other low-end American chocolate for everyday snacks, Lindt and Cadbury for somewhere in between.

Hershey's shouldn't even be in the running, it's kind of crap.

European all the way. But I'm of Finnish descent so I'm probably biased.

I do love Lindt and Toblerone, but I mostly love Fazer chocolate from Finland. It's so rich and sweet and creamy. Yum.

But Godiva and Ghirardelli isn't bad either.

Re: Chocolate- European brands vs. American brands

For the most part, European chocolate will blow American chocolate out of the water.

Hershey's is just shit IMO, but intentionally made cheap for affordability. Same with M&M/Mars. I'll admit I'll pick some fun size bars during Halloween, but if I want quality, I'll pay an extra couple of bucks for some Swiss naps.

I don't think Ghiradelli and Godiva are American.

European. I'm neither American nor European but European chocolate is not as sirupy or too sugary sweet.
