Foie Gras is motherfucking delicious though
(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)Although you mention Quebec which I imagine is different than France (where I had it). At least, the French would insist it is so.
Truthfully, though, animals are treated absolutely horrifically in industrialized settings. And even if you're vegan, you can't fully escape it because animals products are used in absolutely EVERYTHING, not just food.
So on the one hand, I understand condemning it, but it also makes me feel like a hypocrite knowing how endemic similar practices are to basically every industry.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)But yes, the Perigord is justly famous for its superior foie gras. There is an element of this artisan industry that non-French people just cannot appreciate. Plus, it's better fresh: the canned version lasts longer but I am not entirely convinced it's the same as a freshly cut block or slice.
It's just as well it's been banned in the US so the bulk of the production is not wasted on them, IMO. They can console themselves with Oreo cookies or Doritos and feeling superior because they are 'kinder' to animals, so everyone is happy this way! Win/win.
In the interest of full disclosure, I think Doritos are great -if on the gross side-, but Oreo cookies I still don't get and I've lived in the US for over twenty years. I am a failure as an American, but at least I still have my figure, which will have to make up for it. Oh well. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)I'm embarrassed to have a Canadian name now if it's going to be associated with someone like this. I feel like I have to apologize on behalf of france and I'm only the mother of two half French Canadian kids.
Good god, way to keep the bitchy superior attitude stereotype alive there, anon.

i'm sorry if this comment comes off as bitchy, i'm not angry at you or anything

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)You might be surprised at how some of us can really appreciate and savor nuance of flavor and quality. But I guess to you all we eat is Doritos and MickyDs, amirite?
Re: Foie Gras is motherfucking delicious though
(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)As an aside, in the few places where I have seen macarons sold in the US, both French bakeries and specialized stores, they are flattish and don't rise the way they should, so personally I wouldn't go out of my way to get any. I've even tried a few and was rather disappointed as to consistency/crunchiness and flavor.
Good Lord, lots of nastiness in response to a fairly innocuous comment! Was it the reference to weight statistics? If so, I am sorry, but facts are not something I can apologize for...
Was it the reference to my own? Because that may have sounded self-satisfied (well, it is an uphill battle past 50, so yes, I am rather proud of it because -newsflash- it's not easy) but it's not exactly an insult as far as I know.
If it is about the reference to junk food, I believe it was clear from my comment that I eat junk food too, so I am not sure what you are getting all miffed about?
Re: Foie Gras is motherfucking delicious though
(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)They're getting miffed because your comment sounded elitist and rude. Unless you're a troll I don't know how you couldn't see that. That comment was in no way innocuous.
You go on about how delicious foie gras is, preferably fresh, then say it's good it's banned in the us so it isn't "wasted on them", then make a super condescending remark about how they can console themselves with Doritos and Oreo (saying those foods are gross or incomprehensible) and practically sneer about them feeling better for being kinder to animals. Then you end it with "I am a failure as an American, but at least I still have my figure", which just sounds like another smug way to say 'at least I'm not fat like those American Dorito munchers'.
