I respect vegeterianism, although I am not one myself and don't agree with the reasoning, but I do think that it's a little odd to be fine with the show while it was (presumably) using meat and then draw the line and consider it absolutely morally abhorrent when it's calf brains and foie gras.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand drawing the line at fois gras, as it's made by forcefeeding the poor birds. Calf brains on the other hand...not sure what it is that makes it a worse thing than meat in general.

I don't think it's that strange to not want to support/watch it anymore. You can eat meat and still try to be responsible about it -- like only buying free-range eggs, for example.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see why it's odd. There's an exceptional level of cruelty (even above and beyond what you see in factory farming) associated with the production of veal and foie gras. It doesn't seem like a strange distinction to draw at all.

I'm not the OP (nor am I vegetarian), but I draw the line at food that can only be achieved through the suffering of animals. Therefore, I refuse to eat and watch cooking shows that use meat like foie gras and veal. Not sure about calf brains, I've never seen it used on a show or on a menu, but I can understand why someone would draw the line where OP did.

Yeah, the foie gras thing is a specific kind of abuse that's different from other kinds of meat. Not entirely sure about the calf brains, though maybe if it's connected to veal? (veal calves are deliberately atrophied)

ngl both are delicious

but while i can understand why someone would boycott foie gras, why calf brain? there's no cruelty involved afaik. you just raise the calf normally, then kill it painlessly and extract the brain along with the rest of the meat.

Foie Gras is motherfucking delicious though

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Like holy crap. SOOOOO GOOOD

Although you mention Quebec which I imagine is different than France (where I had it). At least, the French would insist it is so.

Truthfully, though, animals are treated absolutely horrifically in industrialized settings. And even if you're vegan, you can't fully escape it because animals products are used in absolutely EVERYTHING, not just food.

So on the one hand, I understand condemning it, but it also makes me feel like a hypocrite knowing how endemic similar practices are to basically every industry.

Wow!

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Both are delicious! I absolutely love calf brains, it's a bit like comfort food for me as I remember my father searing some for us for lunch from time to time when I was a kid. Wonderful, wonderful food... so delicate and creamy, truly melt-in-your mouth stuff. Very light on the tongue.

And foie gras! OMG, stop mentioning delicacies when I am trying to watch my weight, you enabler! :D

Sorry, getting back to your secret: I understand some types of insects like crickets and certain types of worms are considered great snacks (full of proteins!) in some parts of world like Asia, Africa and South America. Maybe you could snack on those instead of bemoaning the fate of farm animals who wouldn't even be raised in such huge quantities if not destined to become our food? They certainly have much better lives and better treated than chickens who are trapped in the smallest possible metallic cages their whole lives, and have their beaks cut off: look at a few documentaries on this topic before you start discussing how different farm animal are treated.

Good luck, I'll let you get on that... :)

This comment is so strange. They're talking about not wanting to watch a show. Why would you suggest they eat insects? They seem perfectly happy being a vegetarian. You seem weirdly offended that someone doesn't like your favorite food.

What the heck does this even mean? Animals deserve to endure factory farming because they are... destined to become our food? What. Chickens may have it bad, but so do... pretty much every other animal that is factory farmed.

I guess none of that bothers you, huh.

I get that foie gras has a bad rep, but eating brains isn't worse than eating any other kind of offal.

'Cept if those brains have the prions to give you Mad Cow Disease.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-04 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, at least a hundred countries have delicacies that you will never be able to wrap your head around.

If you're lucky, you'll only encounter countries that actually wait until the animal is dead before cutting it up and eating it.

It will never cease to amaze me how defensive meat-eaters get about vegetarians/vegans. Not so much in this thread (besides minor justification of factory farming, omg) but if I say I'm vegetarian, cue the masses of meat eaters preaching to me about how it's bad for my health, the animals aren't treated badly, meat is so tasty and they will eat another hamburger in my honor. Just yesterday I was in the supermarket checking out, and I happened to have a box of veggie burgers. The cashier ranted to me about an "article he read" that said vegetarianism was wasteful because... the cows are going to die anyway. ??? without even knowing why I was vegetarian.

blah. I'm not anti-meat but I am anti-animal cruelty, which is one of the big reasons I'm vegetarian. Yes, I try to avoid products tested on animals, and yes, I know it's impossible to completely avoid and I understand that. But I do my best not to put money toward the meat industry.

that said... I agree with the general sentiment, what's wrong with calf brains? I mean, it's not different from beef in general? If the animal was raised humanely and killed humanely, I don't see the problem. Of course, chances are the animal wasn't raised humanely, but in that case you should be disgusted by every time the show uses meat in the first place..

It's basically another case of some people feeling judged because others aren't living exactly how they are, and view what everyone else does as an unspoken statement on what they do. Vegetarians/vegans do it to meat-eaters, as well, and it's just...so annoying.

I do get this. I find the way foie gras is made to be quite upsetting and cruel. As for the calf brains, while I would totally try them once, I do have major reservations with eating very young animals. I just feel bad eating a baby anything. Once it's grown and not cute, however, then I want to chow down. But I'm looking forward to the day where tasty meat can be grown in a lab so we can just use farm animals for the best purpose possible: cuddling. (Pigs are cute.)

Also, I'd totally watch this show regardless of the ingredients. Cooking is neat.
