It will never cease to amaze me how defensive meat-eaters get about vegetarians/vegans. Not so much in this thread (besides minor justification of factory farming, omg) but if I say I'm vegetarian, cue the masses of meat eaters preaching to me about how it's bad for my health, the animals aren't treated badly, meat is so tasty and they will eat another hamburger in my honor. Just yesterday I was in the supermarket checking out, and I happened to have a box of veggie burgers. The cashier ranted to me about an "article he read" that said vegetarianism was wasteful because... the cows are going to die anyway. ??? without even knowing why I was vegetarian.

blah. I'm not anti-meat but I am anti-animal cruelty, which is one of the big reasons I'm vegetarian. Yes, I try to avoid products tested on animals, and yes, I know it's impossible to completely avoid and I understand that. But I do my best not to put money toward the meat industry.

that said... I agree with the general sentiment, what's wrong with calf brains? I mean, it's not different from beef in general? If the animal was raised humanely and killed humanely, I don't see the problem. Of course, chances are the animal wasn't raised humanely, but in that case you should be disgusted by every time the show uses meat in the first place..

It's basically another case of some people feeling judged because others aren't living exactly how they are, and view what everyone else does as an unspoken statement on what they do. Vegetarians/vegans do it to meat-eaters, as well, and it's just...so annoying.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-04 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry you've gone through that. It really isn't anyone's place to judge your choices. But I do think the secret maker kind of opened himself/herself up to attack though we they attack certain foods. If you're judging others, you can't expect not to get judged in turn, you know?

I'll admit that I tend to have issues with certain more militant vegetarians/vegans/animal rights activists simply because they CAN do a lot of damage through their actions. When I was an undergraduate, one of the labs in my university was broken into by a vegetarian/animal rights group who proceeded to "liberate" fish being used for research on diabetes. Considering that cost one of my friends several MONTHS of time, energy, and money, I was pretty bitter against them for a while.

I imagine you're not at all like them, but in the field I work in, I often run into some "crazies" and I'll admit, sometimes I've gone home and had a nice, juicy burger just to spite them.

Okay, sure, there are crazies in literally every issue. Crazy SJW feminists don't make feminism unimportant, though, and neither do crazy vegans.

You going home to have a "nice, juicy burger just to spite them" is pretty sad, though. By all means eat burgers if you want, but if you're doing it to support animal cruelty/factory farming to get back at people who don't, that's definitely frustrating. Again, I'm not against eating meat and I don't demand that everyone take a stance against animal cruelty, but it's sad when people sort of ignore the core issue here in order to "spite" people. Akin to voting Republican or something just to make your liberal hippie whacko aunt mad.

+1. THis is a good comment.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-04 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
that is literally one of the large reasons that people identify with the Republican Party so

you know

America

I'm trying but I can't make sense of this comment. The large reason people identify with the Republican Party is to distance themselves from their crazy liberal hippie aunts or...?

I'm not a vegetarian and I eat veggie burgers a lot because I generally avoid beef for environmental reasons. Some kinds taste really good!

What annoys me, as an ex-vegetarian, is that so many meat eaters are so sure vegetarianism is unhealthy. You know what? I grew up believing that being vegetarian (ovo-lacto in my case) was healthier, and just because I happen to like meat does not change that opinion, it simply makes me aware that I probably have an unhealthier diet than some.

But on the "What's wrong with calf brains?" front, I believe so much of modern western society has been indoctrinated with a squick to offal in general. Try reading the "Foreign Queasine" article on TV Tropes for what it has to say about haggis (which amounts to saying it is basically a kind of sausage with ingredients that are fully identified, which is more than can be said for some mass-produced sausages).

Better yet, on the reputation of haggis?
