What WIP do you want to finish?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-08-04 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Shamelessly inspired by Secret #10.

What are some WIPs that you really regret not finishing, but also don't think you could finish right now?

For me, it's two main ones: an X-Men!AU Merlin fic, and a "Thor 1, but with reasonable character development" MCU fic. Maybe that old royal!Merlin AU fic, too. The rest I'm a little sad about but ultimately don't have particularly strong feelings on at this point.

What about you guys? What fics (or fanart or whatever else) do you wish you could finish, but don't think you could?

An original work called Three Heartbeats. It's about the ghost of a girl who died in a car crash, who tries to arrange a romance between her boyfriend and a new girl so that she can move on with no regrets. Then the new girl falls in love with the mysterious young woman who appears in her dreams, and everything goes topsy-turvy.

I tried writing part of it, was told that what I thought was a cute fluffy sex scene had seriously rapey undertones, and was so horrified I haven't been able to write any sort of sex scene since. (I don't think this story can work without sex, so . . .)

Any chance for a link? It sounds quite interesting.

Eh, other people's perceptions can be screwed, and maybe you can use that as an opportunity to figure out how to write cute, fluffy sex-scenes without rapey undertones.

I had similar issues after people told me how "romantic" a sex scene/smut fic was, a scene which was very dub-con, bordering on outright non-con. I spent ages not writing sex (either good sex or bad/dub-/non-con) due to that, but eventually got around to using that as a starting point to try and make sexual intentions more obvious. :)

Definitely sounds like an intriguing story!

I'm thirding the interest in your WIP! If you could share a link for what you have up, I'd love to read it. And if you'd like, give you input on any potential non-con, too. C:

I have this ghost/human romance fic in a fandom I'm no longer in. It has some big fans who are still in the fandom, so it still gets traffic even though its been about two years since I updated. I don't hate the idea (I love ghost stories), but my writing has improved a lot even since then and I just am not into the source material anymore. I feel bad for the people leaving comments on it but... :/

Wow, a lot of ghost related ones. I'll add another! (Though I don't post wips, so these exist only on my computer)

I had a TW fic where Stiles gets brutally killed by some vampires and comes back immediately as a ghost. Only the other supernatural things could see him, but he is (understandably) messed-up about the whole dead thing, and runs. He's gone for a while, until the equivalent of a grim reaper finds him and he flees back to the relative safety of Beacon Hills, where he hangs with the gang, helps take out the vampires and settles into being the friendly neighborhood spook. But then season 3 happened and I stopped wanting to write TW fic and that was the end of that.

For a different (much older) fandom, I once wrote a superpowered HS AU that I'm sad I never finished. But I'm years out of that fandom now, it's long dead, and no one really gave a shit about it anyway, so.

I have two DP crossovers, one with Criminal Minds, and the other with Law and Order SVU that I'm having trouble with , but a lot of people are interested in. I want to finish them but when I try , it all seems wrong.

Also I have this one thing- Spirals ( A DP AU) that I planned the story out chapter by chapter, and it was perfect

But then I lost it all (and most of the first chapter) when my flash drive fucked up. I feel so bad about that one kudos. Just I'm sorry....

Several of my old Wrestling fics, however, it's complicated by the fact that a few of the 'characters' are, well, dead, and one pretty infamously killed his wife and kid.

Two pre-canon Middleman fics. One's about the current Middleman's recruitment and early years, detailing how Raveena Rao turned him from an angry-yet-honorable Navy man into the clean-living hero he is today and how they gradually fell in love. The other is the story of Roxy's reformation, starting with a chance encounter with a Middleman centuries ago. Both ended up being broader in scope than I feel capable of tackling, although I've been considering releasing the intro to the first one into the wild as a standalone.

I have a very old Hikaru no Go WIP that was quite popular at the time I started writing it and remains unfinished with just one chapter to go. I just totally lost my muse for that series entirely -- I was reading the manga as it came out and the abrupt, unsatisfying ending just kinda...sucked all my fandom energy out. Every now and again I think it'd be nice to finish it, since I still occasionally get a follow notice from ff.net and I do know exactly how I want that fic to end, but I feel like I don't have a good enough handle on those characters anymore to write it.

With only one chapter left, if you feel you can't finish it, perhaps you could post a summary of how the fic ends, just to give everyone some closure and cross the WIP off your list. You could always come back and replace the summary with a full chapter, if you ever rediscover the inspiration. C:

My AU Supernatural series that started with "Honorable Enterprise" and "The Waters and the Wild" and then I got halfway through "The Unforgiving Minute" and petered out because I lost all interest in the show. I'd still like to finish it though because it's kind of the opposite of a 'rocks fall everyone dies' au and I want to read happy SPN fic and its hard to find dammit.

I have an SPG fanfic that I need to finish before I start anything else, and I was hoping to finish it over the summer, but apparently that is not in the cards.

Hopefully I'll be able to start working on it at some point before school starts again, but I don't know, and now I have a job that will be starting in September, on top of school, so I'm worried.

I wish I could finish my 6-year-neglected Naruto WIP. Shino/Hinata. I have all these epic plans for the fic, and I intimidated myself away from working on it back when the bunny was fresh. Now I have all these other stories I want to tell, and my newer WIPs have more fans, so waiting another couple years before I get back to the ShinoHina fic won't make much difference.

Plus the WIP I'm working on updating this summer is my most popular fic, and adding a new chapter will be hugely satisfying in hits, reviews, faves, alerts, and kudos. I don't get much reader feedback at all, and the boost will be lovely to my acknowledgement-hungry self. :3

I have a couple that I'll always regret and at least one of them I think is probably impossible to pick back up:

Stargate SG-1
It was an alternate take on the episode "Point of View" where the alternate reality versions of Sam and Kawalsky that came through the quantum mirror were different. In this story, Sam was pregnant (with Alternate-Jack's baby, because Jack/Sam was still the same), and while I hadn't outright stated it yet, Kawalsky and Alternate-Daniel were in a relationship.

I really liked the stories I had for the alternate reality, and I liked the slice of life stuff I had thought out for when "our" (uncoupled) Sam and Jack are left with this kid that they can't bear to give up and Kawalsky integrates himself into his new reality, but then my brain started to wander in the direction of special prophecy babies. I didn't immediately write it, and now I've hit the point where I know special prophecy babies are bad ideas.

Star Wars
There's one book in the EU -- I don't even remember it's title now, I just remember that Luke and Leia had a fight because he wanted to look into her mind to find out more about their parents, and Leia doesn't want anything to do with anything that came from Vader, and Luke should leave her alone.

My story took Luke back to Tatooine, only to find out it's in the midst of a civil war. And that his mother had been there the whole time until a relatively recent death, and he has a stepfather and half-siblings (who treat him with varying degrees of acceptance and coldness). The nature of the war kept Luke and his family's side trapped and unable to communicate offworld, and it wasn't until something else brought Leia and Han to Tatooine and they all reconnect.

And I just don't think I want to write all those original characters now (I only got through Luke crashlanding).

I have a TRON fic involving most of the cast attending group therapy together. It's not really therapy, the therapist doesn't act like any sort of professional should, and it's styled more like a sitcom, with a mostly comedic tone and some deeper character-developing moments throughout. It's the longest consecutive thing I've written to date, but I wrote most of it in about two weeks total, and that was three years ago. The sitcom style is biting me in the ass, because when I started it I had no idea how it would end, and I wrote a lot of things back then that don't ring true to me now (including one sequence with implications and phrasing that I wince at whenever I see it).

I've said I'll finish it, and I'll be damned if it makes me a liar, but... god, I have no idea what to do next. I have a feeling that the whole thing will wind up being at least twice as long by the time it's finished, and I just... I don't have that kind of time and brain space anymore.

I'll finish it if I die while I'm doing it, but it's going take a long fucking time at this rate.
