I'm always torn on this issue. On one hand, as others have stated, this is all free and writers don't owe anyone anything. On the other hand, the more people that abandon WIPs, the less people are willing to read WIPs and authors that need/appreciate the feedback as the story is going along (such as myself - I've had reader comments that caused me to look at a fic in a whole new way and really enhance it, in my opinion) are kinda getting screwed.

But again, since none of us are getting paid for this, I should probably just sit down and shut my mouth.

One thing I do (as a reader) is to review the author's track record. If it looks like they've got a decent history of completing their WIPs - even if there are gaps of several months between chapters - I'm prepared to give them a try, and accompany them on the journey.

OTOH if they've got two or more abandoned WIPs, I'm going to pick through their fics and only read/comment on the ones that are complete.

So FWIW, you're not penalized - by me, at any rate.
