At least you are self aware enough to know how fucking annoying that is and how terrible you are.

and hopefully people are able to look at your posting history and realize this before they invested.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
People here get really angry about this, I've noticed.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's marked a wip don't read it? Why does don't like don't read stop applying to wips??

Not OP but this vitriol is always so weird.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Calling them "terrible" seems a little OTT.

They should probably stop posting unfinished WIPs, though.

It always surprises me how entitled people get about stuff provided for absolutely free.

Yeah, because authors who write for you on their time for free owe you that fic.

Seriously, if you're that upset, just stay away from WIP's altogether.

Too bad you don't realize that you're not entitled to work, and a person isn't terrible because they are struggling to finish something.

Do any of the people who feel like this have any idea what it's like for a writer? Like somedays you can't write, everything you do write makes you angry and you just take a break and start something else. Or one day you start something, and you plan everything out in a document but then you lose it because the USB drive gets fucked up and demands you reformat it and you lose EVERYTHING and you're just too angry with yourself and disappointed to even go back to it? And then you start out strong with an idea and start plotting it....and then slowly the inspiration for the idea peters out when you're onto chapter 5 and you need a break/ These are all things that have

Writers are not machines that just crank out stories. We are PEOPLE.

and to those who say - "well don't post anything until you're finished, God!"

Maybe that works for some people, but not for everyone. Working on it bit by bit helps me because if I sat down and wrote a whole fic all at once , I'd get intimidated and wouldn't be able to write a thing. If you don't like an incomplete story , no one's forcing you to read it....just don't demand people write something in a certain way or don't write it at all. (I try not to DROP things if I can help it , just put it on hiatus for when I have ideas again)

With me it's more that the story sort of gets out of hand, requires more chapters than I intended to, and I hardly have the courage to write anymore. And then eventually I get into a fandom that holds my interest more. I think I'll just be trying for one-shots more now.

I think this is the first time I've gone "Have I been making secerts in my sleep?" because seriously I'm bad at this too. I would like to get back to WIPs, but I can and do lose the spark for them sometimes I get distracted by shiny new stuff.

So, completely understand you OP. Completely understand.

I'm sorry this happens to you, and sorry for those people who are disappointed. Well, it's why I don't commit to reading WiPs from authors without solid track records, and it's why I only post completed stuff.

I know how that is OP. That's why I try not to post any chapters of a multi-chapter fic until I have all it completed. That way if I lose steam on a fic I don't have to worry about leaving people hanging anymore. It also helps if I get some inspiration in the middle of a fic, and have to go back and completely rewrite previous chapters.

"Days later when you remember it existed". DAYS later?

OP, you are not that bad. I have four WIPs. Two I feel accomplished if I update more than twice a year. One I haven't updated in four years, but I'm working on the next chapter this summer. One I haven't updated in six years, but I haven't given up on it, for I have plans.

To be fair, I DO state in my profile that I am very slow when it comes to updating, and anyone who pays attention to the posted and updated dates on my fics will have an idea of how very infrequently I can devote time to fanfic.

OP, I hope you haven't completely blown off your WIPs. Maybe one day you'll find the bunny for one of them again and dive back in. C: The handful of fans for each of my WIPs are always delighted when I can post a new chapter. I bet yours would be, too. ^^V

I don't see why this is a big deal, unless you're promising updates when you don't know if you'll be able to follow through.

People know they're taking a risk when they read WIPs.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-04 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm always torn on this issue. On one hand, as others have stated, this is all free and writers don't owe anyone anything. On the other hand, the more people that abandon WIPs, the less people are willing to read WIPs and authors that need/appreciate the feedback as the story is going along (such as myself - I've had reader comments that caused me to look at a fic in a whole new way and really enhance it, in my opinion) are kinda getting screwed.

But again, since none of us are getting paid for this, I should probably just sit down and shut my mouth.

Maybe don't share it? If you don't share it maybe you'll sustain the excitement you have about introducing other people to your work.

I sympathise with you.

I once ran across a writer like you, and it made me realise I was very similar. It made me very reluctant to write at all, because I know I would do the same.

(And it gets irritating when people see how I have a very active imagination and say "Why don't you write it?" when I know that if I tried to write a fic of it, it would never see light of day.)

I have a crossover plot in my head at the moment of my RP silmaril character being a Grey Warden (LotR/Dragon Age cross), but outside writing out summaries and writing the occasional micro-fic of small scenes (like Elenaria's reaction to Anders idly commenting about someone buying Andraste's shinbone in Amaranthine) that I post on a Twitter long-post app, the story is never going to fully eventuate.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-04 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, this is pretty much why I've sworn off WIPs.

(I totally get why writers run out of steam, BTW, and I'm sympathetic to that - no one owes me the conclusion to their fic. But as a reader, I find it frustrating to love a WIP and then find myself left in perpetual suspense.)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-04 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's from reading manga, but I've honestly never gotten the big deal about unfinished WIPs. If I'm reading one, I get to the end, go "aww," maybe put it on my watch list and go along with my day. I totally get avoiding them if that's too irritating to you, but I'll never understand the people who act like unfinished WIPs kicked their pet or something.

Do it how you wanna do it, OP. :)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-04 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You are why I never read WIPs.

Don't feel bad OP, I've got a few WIPs sitting on my AO3 account (one is over a DECADE old). I keep telling myself I'll get back to them, but... it takes a lot of effort to jazz yourself up when you've lost the spark.

Fortunately, a fic overhaul is good for that, sometimes.
