Vaginal Knitting

It's a thing apparently.

I've heard of that before. I just can't get over imagining how itchy it must be.

That can't be good for your health.

wat.

that looks SO uncomfortable. (and gross. I wouldn't touch something that was knitted out your ass and I wouldn't do it with your vag, either)

I my first thought was that she'd learned to manipulate the knitting needles with her vagina, and I was ready to be impressed because I'm pretty sure that's impossible.

Then I read it and I'm kind of just grossed out.

That was my first thought, too. And then I was trying to figure out which muscles you use, and how do flex with any sort of dexterity to actually be able to wield knitting needles. But now, from reading the comments here, I presume she's just using her vag as a yarn bag or an extra pocket.

I'm thinking way too much about the logistics of this. But I'm thinking about the disgusted reaction some people have and all I can think is that if it's a center-pull ball of yarn then it's only the outer layer or two that's going to get covered in stuff you're not going to want to touch.

Also I'm remembering the time I dyed some yarn and I did a really bad job and it ended up looking like I spilled blood all over it.

As long as she's happy, I guess. I can't help but think things like possible infections though.

I love vaginas and I don't think anyone should be ashamed or embarrassed about their genitals but I don't really see how knitting from it is going to get people to "question the fears and the negative associations they have with the vulva". It seems more like something done for shock value (but then again, maybe I just don't understand performance artists)

Pretty sure it's just for the shock value. And it annoys me because it's exactly the kind of thing people will hold up to say "feminists are craaaazy"

I'm having trouble understanding how this is supposed to achieve the end that she's aiming for.

Well, no one said all artists had to be smart.

I also really wish the article didn't link to vagina cakes-- they wouldn't bother me as much if they were just vaginas, but putting a disembodied baby doll's head on top of it is just disturbing.

I wouldn't do it, but hey, I've seen some weird performance art in my day. I'm not even surprised.

I really, really hope she intends to thoroughly wash whatever she knits.

How completely silly, but harmless. It's plain old wool that camps out in her vag for less than a day, so long as it's clean, I doubt her ladybits are in much more danger than they would be from a tampon. And all the fears in the comments over there that she plans to sell the results to their children or something are kind of hilarious. It's performance, not a wacky new form of factory production for the world's sweaters.

The HuffPo article linked to some related art pieces, but there was no mention of Carolee Schneeman's fairly influential Interior Scroll, which seems like its most direct predecessor (NSFW):

http://www.caroleeschneemann.com/interiorscroll.html

I don't have the art/feminist history chops to make a solid comparison, but it's still interesting to note the differences between the performances.

...Well, that sounds uncomfortable. Not sure why this is a thing, but she's allowed to do what she wants with her vagina, so...enjoy, lady.

Well.

Alrighty then?

(Tbh I've seen much weirder performance art but this did make me pause for a moment, my only thought: wouldn't the wool be a little, damp?).

You know you just did a Kegel exercise reading the title of this thread

Re: Vaginal Knitting

(Anonymous) 2014-08-05 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing that bothers me about this is that she claims she's doing it to *~break down boundaries surrounding the taboo subject of female genitals~*. Bullshit she is. If you want to do some crotch knitting for a performance piece then go for it, but I sincerely doubt that this will un-taboo vaginas for anyone.

Indeed, and I think it may have the opposite effect. :/

That was odd. And it sounds uncomfortable as hell.
