sad news (TW: animal death)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-08-05 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
We had to say goodbye today to my oldest dog, who had been with our family for 14.5 years.

The vet came to our house and she passed peacefully.

I feel weird about it. Sad and relieved at the same time (she had bone cancer and was in a lot of pain the last couple of days). I keep thinking if I just walk to another room she'll be laying there. It's also weird seeing my parents cry. My mom cries rarely, and my dad even less. We all cried today.

I'm actually doing ok - it was rough for a few hours today but we've been anticipating this for a long time. I'm just not thinking about it a lot most of the time. We have our other two dogs too so the house doesn't feel really empty or anything.

I'm so sorry.

I know what you mean about the relief. In my dog's last days she could barely move and for a while before that her arthritis was even worse than mine and I felt bad watching her move around.

I was at school at the time and my dad sent me a collage he had made of old pictures of her. It was completely unexpected since he's not usually the sentimental type.

It's good that you're doing okay. I hope it doesn't hit you hard later.

Yeah, she was doing ok (not great, but ok) until maybe a week ago, and it's just gotten worse every day. She was panting and breathing hard and her face looked like she was in pain, which I haven't really seen on her before, ever. She was such a soldier - determined to keep sticking to her routine. She ate and enjoyed it every day and didn't have any accidents in the house - she really WANTED to go pee/poop on the grass, but today and yesterday my dad had to carry her out to the backyard or she wouldn't have been able to.

She *could* move, but she didn't very often, since it was painful and hard. She had only two fully functioning legs and one half-functioning. The other leg is where the tumor was (bone cancer) and it was just completely useless at the end.

I have an album of pictures of her on Facebook that I add to when I find more pictures.

Also, thank you. :)

Very sorry for your loss. It's hard to lose a beloved pet, especially one you've had for so long.

Yeah, she was a fixture in my life and in my house...I was 9 when we adopted her; now I'm 24. Basically, I grew up with her.

Thanks.

That's rough and I'm sorry you and your family had to go through it.

Losing a pet is incredibly hard. It does make it easier if you try to keep your mind off it, and it's good that you have other pets to be affectionate with and give you company!

Either way, it's understandable that you feel a certain sense of relief seeing as she was in pain. No one wants to see a loved one suffer.

I wish your family the best. <3

Yeah, she was hurting a lot just in the past few days - breathing hard and looking like she was in pain - and having trouble moving. That part was hard, though she was still wagging her tail and eating food with enthusiasm, even today, so I'm happy she had at least a small bit of her quality of life.

Thank you so much. <3 My siblings both left the house because they didn't want to be here when it happened. My sister was only two when we adopted her - she probably doesn't even remember life without her.

Ugh, that's a terrible thing to have to watch happen. :( When our girl passed she could barely walk, wouldn't eat and didn't have any livelihood left in her. It was difficult to let her go, but not really any worse than watching her suffer. It's a shit thing to have to go through, but at least she kept a bit of her spark, you know?

I understand them leaving, but I also get staying. Being with a dog that long...they're part of your family and it's hard to remember what life was like before they came along. (If it's their first experience with death, that makes it even worse.) I hope you all manage! I know it'll be tough, though.

My condolences. I had to let go of my 20 year old cat really recently and I still see her out of the corner of my eye sometimes.

It helped to get a new kitten and distract myself with that, and I'm starting to really like the little asshole.

I'm sorry...did you post about that? I seem to remember you talking about a 20-year-old cat.

And yeah, I have the same feeling - like if I walk into the next room she'll just be laying there.

How old is the new kitten?

New kitten is 4 months old, and he sure helps fill the void. I still miss my Weirds, but it would be worse having to sleep in an empty bed.
