I need to get around to watching this. I've heard how much people hate Betty and then I watched the first two episodes and thought she was cute.

Betty goes through a lot of character growth as the show goes on and some of it isn't... great growth.

A lot of the people on this show are assholes.

I've heard that too. I'm curious to see for myself.

Give it a try. It's frustrating to see the regressive (though not entirely abandoned) sexist and sometimes misogynistic ideas about women (and the ridiculous/sexist ones about men), but a number of the characters are fabulous, and their story arcs are awesome (Peggy, Joan, Sally, even Don, though he pisses me off a lot, Peter....)

Go for it. It's visually gorgeous and sometimes amazingly fun and just really good stuff.
