No pools! How ever will I drown my sims now? (Or is that why there are no pools?)

You can't drown them now. They've learned how to get out of the pool without a ladder.

(Unless, possibly, you can wall in the pool so that there's no accessible edge. I haven't tried that.)

I just did try that, and they do indeed drown.

Get them in the pool, go to Build Mode, build a fence or raise the ground around the pool to unclimbable steepness. I worked that one out very early, when I made the mistake of killing off Bella without realising how uncommon it can be to get the Ghostatron offer.
