Ohh man, it's been a while since I've read fic for Free! so I don't know if it's died down or not, but just imagine a sex scene with one character being referred to as "the dolphin." Ugh.

I both agree and don't. I think in the case where you're in a scene with two people of the same gender, some light epithets become necessary-- it's really awkward to just name drop over and over again, and a million "he"s get really confusing. But they should be used sparingly, and really overly flowery ones are definitely out.
