Fanfiction dealbreakers

What makes you backbutton out of a fic immediately? Maybe apart from the usual suspects like horrible writing style and OOCness.

I can't stand surprise!established relationships. I want to read about how the characters overcame the problems that kept them apart in canon and not have that skipped in favor of honeymoon phase fluff that comes out of nowhere.

Aaaaargh yes. It's especially bad when you have a fic where the characters are really stoic and unemotional, and then you click on something and they're already together and they've gotten completely comfortable with each other. It's just like, no! I want to read about them breaking down their reserves slowly! That is what I am here for!

Mostly it's just horrible writing and OOCness, but barring that, wildly implausible plot points.

Random misogyny, especially when it's completely out of character.

Terrible dialogue. Stupid terms for body parts.

Surprise rape/abuse. If you want to write about a relationship that oscillates between X beating the hell out of Y and X and Y being cuddly lovebugs, that's okay, but please realize that that needs to be warned for.

If I'm reading about one of my OTPs which just happens to contain a character that is in the fandom's juggernaut ship, I'd rather not have the juggernaut ship acknowledged or shoehorned in for drama. I came for my favorite pairing, not that bullshit.

unwarned for crossovers, especially from any of the superwholock varieties. I'll read x-overs, even the Wholock kind, but I want to be warned upfront for appearances of a consulting timelord.

And the usual OC-centric, first-person present-tense crap. That is just shitty writing.

Oh and for Ranma fics I will never knowingly read a competent!Akane fic.

Character bashing, even if it is of a character I hate.

Fics that are basically an excuse for the authors to "fix" everything they see wrong with canon while bashing canon at the same time.

Grim, dark, edgy, and rebellious fics that do all those things without doing it well and where it is just edgy and rebellious for the sake of being edgy and rebellious. I see this a lot in Harry Potter fics. "Independent" Harry fics can work, but most of the time they really, really don't.

- Really bad grammar/spelling in the firs few phrases. Not just a spelling mistake, but just a train-wreck all-in-all.

- characterxreader narratives, and most first-person POV's unless really well-done.

- Blatant self-insert OC's.

- Fics where it's blatantly clear they were written by a 13-year-old or someone with the maturity of one.

- *Boring* sex scenes - that's about the worst thing PWP can be.

- People blatantly bringing in their own politics about a subject and being all preachy about it.

I'm sure there's more.

Terrible dialogue. Maybe this falls under OOCness, but I haaaaate it when characters are talking and they don't even sound like themselves. Syntax, vocabulary, stupid catchphrases, all completely off target. I don't know if the writers are simply writing as they think/talk or if they're trying to do some sort of Joss Whedon rip off or what, but... just no.

Stories where nothing actually happens.

Stories where things happen in a random order.

Long, long, long stories where a relationship takes 'one step forward, two steps back' in every bloody chapter. ("Just do it!")

Ultra-rationalist fics where characterization are thrown to the winds in favor of what the author thinks a character ought to logically and objectively do. Oddly enough that tends to involve shooting people or punching people a lot.

Strict parents being called "abusive" through doing things the author thinks kids ought to be able to do, like declaring a parent abusive for setting a curfew, or refusing to loan out the family car to a teenager, or expecting a teenager in a no-healthcare country to look after older family members as a matter of course. Authors, be brattier.

I don't like most surprises, but I dislike surprise future and human/supernatural AUs the most. All of a sudden, in the middle of the fic, it's mentioned that all of this takes place several years in the future, so that the writer can skip character development, or everyone is human/supernatural (whatever is opposite for canon) for no particular reason.

Breakups and any untagged pairings for the main characters. Those usually lead to several chapters of mind-numbing angst, so I'll backbutton out as soon as those happen.

High school AU's.

Character turned into a baby fics.

Smart characters being written as stupid.

Character bashing fics.

Noncanon pairing fics where canonically established pairing AxB is broken up in a really stupid way so the noncanon pairing AxC can pair up. Usually by having character B do something wildly OOC to make them look like an asshole and oh my God why is A with B when C is soooo much better? Boo.

Characters watching/becoming fans of popular tv series/movies.

I can ignore it if it's just a mention or a character making a pop culture reference when it fits, but fics where any plot vanishes to focus a few thousand of words on the characters watching/discussing tv series/movies making me backbutton asap even if I had liked the fic before that.

Fangirl Foreign Language, but with the caveat that if it was in the source, it's a lot less annoying (i.e. Assassin's Creed II with all the swearing in Italian). Degree of annoyance rises with the amount and importance of dialogue being 'untranslated.'

This is kind of rare, but characters using an inappropriate degree of swearing for their character background. It's just terrifically awkward to read someone who is ostensibly a US Marine saying "dang it to freaking heck."

On a technical note, wall-of-text. Every time. For the love of god, paragraphs are your friend!

More seriously, unwarned for abuse/dubcon/noncon/misogyny/etc where it's obvious that they're unwarned for because the author doesn't realise that's what they're writing. I mean, people deliberately leaving warnings off is a dick move, but nowhere near as alarming to me as people who apparently genuinely don't know what consent is or why it's important. Backbuttoning so fast on those.

It tends to make me wary about enemy ships and the like, because sometimes I think it shows up not necessarily because of a lack of knowledge, but because of a lack of patience where authors just want their ship to bang ASAP by whatever means necessary and then have a romance regardless of circumstances. With problematic ships this tends to unintentionally go really bad places really fast, apparently without a lot of authors noticing what's happened.
