Fangirl Foreign Language, but with the caveat that if it was in the source, it's a lot less annoying (i.e. Assassin's Creed II with all the swearing in Italian). Degree of annoyance rises with the amount and importance of dialogue being 'untranslated.'

This is kind of rare, but characters using an inappropriate degree of swearing for their character background. It's just terrifically awkward to read someone who is ostensibly a US Marine saying "dang it to freaking heck."

This awkward self-censoring really grates on my nerve. It's acceptable if it's IC but I really prefer characters to either abstain completely from swearing or just fucking say the word everyone knows they mean anyway.

Either don't have the character swear, it isn't compulsory, at all or have them swear using the correct swear words. Although the latter still needs to be used judiciously. Continued repetition of sentences which are a solid 80% or more swear words are dreadfully hard to read. I do understand that some people do swear like that in real life, but something that works in live action or real life does not necessarily work in written fiction. Sometimes it is more than sufficient just to have the narration note "[character] swore heartily and at length" rather than type out five paragraphs of obscenities.

Seriously, I will cheerfully take "$name swore loudly and creatively" every day of the week if the author's uncomfortable with the word fuck or whatever.

I like the "[character] swore heartily and at length" option, unless the setting has some Unusual Euphemisms which can be used for setting-specific colour, but those should not be over-used either.

I know some fandoms have a tendency to repeatedly use an iconic line to death that only occurred in canon once. That can be just as irritating as expletives every second word.

By Andraste's flaming knickers... actually where does Grabthar's Hammer come from anyway?

Agreed with the last one. And on the opposite end I've seen a lot of fics with Harry and Co using "fucking" and so on a lot. The strongest swearing we get in canon is "bloody" and "bullocks." I don't think the characters are going to be swearing this much, and it mostly just seems the author is trying to be dark and edgy.

"Bollocks", I think? "Bullocks" are male cows. "Bollocks" are testicles, and more usually used as a curse word.

You're right.

If I had a dollar for every time some anime fanfic was written in English except for throwing in random Japanese words because the author took Japanese 101. It's even worse when they write it in the description with an asterisk and put the English translation at the bottom. I don't care if the character is a kid learning English as a second language, if they just had a three paragraph monologue describing their home life in English there's zero reason to have them suddenly describe the apple they're eating as aka*

*that's Japanese for "red"

I hate surprise!French because almost nobody gets it right and the characters supposed to speak it fluently just end up sounding weird.
Of course, if the writer can actually pull it off, I tend to be overjoyed, like "hey, I got that!"

Ayrt
Yeah, I get you. I can never understand American actors when they speak French. Like Tony Stark in Iron Man 2 - a friend had to tell me that it was French and not another language - or even worse Allison Argent in Teen Wolf.

The writers who write G-d or J*s*s instead of God or Jesus to try and loophole lawyer their way out of blasphemy. Even worse when it is in dialogue because I don't know anyone who has mastered the art of of pronouncing a "-" or a "*" in mid word. I get that the writer might have a thing about blasphemy, but by the time you come to write down G-d you are already invoking it in spirit, and if I remember my Sunday School lessons Jesus has very little time for rules lawyering. Either Either put in God and Jesus's names properly, or leave them out. No sneaking around the edges.

The whole G-d thing is somewhat specific to Jews, because the stricter ones have a prohibition against destroying the Name (if I recall correctly). It's less about blasphemy in that case. I have never seen Jesus with asterisks, but that is really stupid.

I don't know about J*s*s (people do that? weird), but flip is right about Jews and G-d. They aren't writing it that way to "loophole lawyer their way out of blasphemy." They're writing it that way because they believe that it's wrong to spell it out, regardless of the context in which it's being used.

OMG this. As an ESL, gratitous foreign language used incorrectly stands out like whoa. Watching people butcher my mother tongue is almost physically painful to read. :/

(Luckily, when I've made suggestions in the past to correct this, some authors have taken my advice, so it's not a deal breaker unless author insists they are being right about it).

I agree with you so much on the swearing thing. In my fandom, there's a character who doesn't ever swear, but people have this tendency to have her drop f-bombs all over the place in fic. It's like, no, you guys, she reeeeeally wouldn't be saying "fuck."

I like to go to the opposite end on language: If my character switches language, I will say "...And then she switched to Quenya and yelled at Maedhros, before returning to Westron."

Because I honestly think I would butcher any Elvish if I tried to use it for random lines, and doing it that way is simply easier.
