Re: Fanfiction dealbreakers
(Anonymous) 2014-08-07 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)-Turning a character who's a good person in canon into a homophobe to include "drama" in a slash story featuring the author's favorite pairing.
-Overexaggerating one trait of a character that he or she seemed to have demonstrated only a few times in canon, like low self esteem. Victimizing or infantalizing a character into a emotional mess unless there's a realistic reason why he or she would act OOC.
-Authors whose know very little about the country where the canon TV show, movie, etc., is set, and then don't do their research. Example: A British writer who has American characters use British terms, or who doesn't know about distances between certain states and so writes wrong information. DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST!
-Authors who say "I don't use betas" when they need to because their work is full of spelling and grammar mistakes.
-Any fanfics that are written when the author hasn't seen the canon source, but just copied from others' fanfics. I can always tell who is and who isn't knowledgeable about canon because he or she has seen the show, movie, etc., often, or because he or she has never seen it.
